About
I earned my Ph.D. in Environmental Sciences, specializing in Remote Sensing and GIS, from Osmania University's Department of Environmental Sciences, in collaboration with the National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC-ISRO). My research, conducted at NRSC's Forestry and Ecology Division, focused on the analysis of biodiversity patterns in the North Andaman Islands using satellite data from remote sensing, GIS techniques, and field surveys. My work, which includes over twenty research papers, primarily revolves around the forest diversity, flora, and ecological dynamics of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, covering aspects such as species composition, population trends in endemic species, forest fragmentation, and the impacts of events like tsunamis on land use. This research marked a pioneering effort in biodiversity characterization in the North Andaman Islands.
Post my doctorate, I joined the Salim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History (SACON) in Hyderabad as a Senior Programme Officer. At SACON, my work extended beyond forest research to include the study of wetland dynamics across India. During this period, I led projects mapping the wetlands of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka, leveraging decadal satellite data.
Subsequently, I took on a role at National Collateral Management Services Limited in Hyderabad, where my focus shifted to agricultural applications, specifically mapping paddy cultivation across various Indian states using MODIS satellite imagery and AWS data.
In 2007, I joined the Lab for Spatial Informatics at IIIT Hyderabad as a post-doctoral researcher. My responsibilities included designing and conducting research studies, co-teaching, supervising lab sessions, managing projects, mentoring students, and other lab-related activities. I maintained this role for four years until December 2011, after which I was appointed as an assistant professor at IIIT-H. Since July 2020, I have been serving as an associate professor.
Throughout my tenure at IIIT-H, I have taught a range of courses including Remote Sensing, Ecological and Geospatial Modeling, Environmental Sciences, Human Values, and Ecoinformatics. I have actively engaged in both funded and self-initiated research projects, led workshops, participated in international training programs, and organized national and international conferences. I have published over fifty research articles in various national and international peer-reviewed journals.
My research interests lie in the application of geospatial technology (optical, thermal, and hyperspectral) for natural resource management. Additionally, I am passionate about promoting the use of open-source geospatial software and the development of such tools, to enhance awareness and accessibility in this field.
