About

I am full professor at the University of Coimbra. I studied at the European University Institute in Florence (1992-1995) and gained a PhD in Early Modern History in 1996.
I was visiting professor at USP, São Paulo-Brazil (2008), fellow of the John Carter Brown Library, Providence, USA(2005); of the Nederlanse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek, Netherlands(2012), for a research semester at Leiden University.
I have extensive experience of participating in projects and leading research teams: investigator on the project Cultural Exchange in Europe 1400-1700, promoted by the European Science Foundation(1999-2003); leader of the Portuguese part of the Scientific Commission of the Dizionario Storico dell'Inquisizione, dir. by Adriano Prosperi (2005-2010); coordinator (2002-2016) of the Portugaliae Monumenta Misericordiarum and of the History of the Diocese of Viseu (2011-2016); PI of the project Religion, ecclesiastical administration and justice in the Portuguese Seaborne Empire (1514-1750)-ReligionAJE(2018-2022).
I held various positions of leadership and governance of academic and scientific institutions, such as director of the Archive of the Univ. of Coimbra (2011-2019), dean of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the Univ. of Coimbra (2013-2019), currently scientific coordinator of the Centre for the History of Society and Culture. In recognition of my research, I was elected fellow of the Portuguese Academy of History and of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences.
My research explores the multiple dimensions of religious history of the early modern Portuguese world, with particular emphasis on Inquisition, Bishops and episcopal structures of governance and justice, social disciplining and the impact of dioceses and the secular clergy in the Early Modern Portuguese empire.
