I am the Professor of Medicine and Head of Department of Clinical Medicine at Trinity College Dublin, a Consultant Respiratory Physician in St. James’s Hospital and twice holder of the Health Research Board Clinician Scientist Award. I co-direct the Tuberculosis Service at our national centre at St. James’ Hospital. I am on the advisory group that leads on TB control policy nationally and internationally; towards eradication of this infectious disease that has massive negative societal impact.
Research interests include: Tuberculosis and TB Diagnostics, Infectious diseases, Innate immunology, Molecular and Translational Medicine, Lung diseases, Lung Cancer, Apoptosis, Host Pathogen interactions, Global and Population Health.

• Defining the tuberculosis susceptibility of smokers
• Improving TB vaccines by dendritic cell manipulation
• Developing inhalable microparticles as adjuvant therapy for tuberculosis
• Improving the host response to tuberculosis with retinoids
• Defining the immunometabolomics of TB host response
• Characterising the contribution of Mal to the Interferon gamma driven host response to Mtb.
Research sponsors include; the Health Research Board, Science Foundation Ireland and Royal City of Dublin Hospital Trust. Research output: 132 publications and 11,500 citations, including the journal article on ‘TB and TNF’ cited more than 4800 times. (Source Google scholar)
