About
Dr. Najam Akhtar Shakil is a renowned scientist and professor having more than 33 years of experience at ICAR-Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), New Delhi. Before that he was the Head and Principal Scientist of the Division of Agricultural Chemicals. Dr. Shakil had done his doctoral and post-doctoral research in the US which gave him much needed international exposure that helped him make his subsequent contribution to Indian agricultural science.
As a principal investigator, Dr Shakil managed six major externally funded projects worth over ₹50 crores, including NAIP, National Fund, and Indo-Spanish collaborative initiatives.
His academic footprint includes: Over 400 publications (161 research papers, 4 patents, 35 book chapters, and 210 abstracts). Successful supervision of 14 Master's and PhD students, three of whom secured the prestigious Prime Minister’s Fellowship in collaboration with PI Industries.
An affiliate member of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC), Dr Shakil chaired the 15th IUPAC Congress of Pesticide Chemistry, bringing this prestigious global event to India for the first time.
He also served as the general secretary of the Society for the Promotion of Sustainable Agriculture and has been an invited speaker across the US, Europe, Australia, and Asia.
In recognition of his pioneering work, he has received numerous honours, including the IUPAC Leadership Award (2023), the Outstanding Scientist Award from the Society of Plant Protection Sciences, and the (late) Shri P. P. Singhal Memorial Award.
