About
My research has focused on observational and interventional health promotion, primarily using telehealth approaches to address health disparities among children and adults with disabilities. For more than 14 years, my research team at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) has led telehealth initiatives designed to expand access to evidence ensure to reduce inequities in health promotion for this population.
I have extensive experience serving as principal investigator and director of large, federally funded research and translation centers, including the National Center on Health, Physical Activity and Disability (NCHPAD), funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for over 25 years, and the Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center on Technology to Enhance Mobility and Rehabilitation (RecTech), funded for 22 years by the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR). In September 2024, I became principal investigator of the Disability Health Promotion Research Center (DHPRC), funded by the National Institutes of Health, National Center for Medical Rehabilitation Research within the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.
Directing these multi-component, interdisciplinary centers has provided substantial experience in research leadership, mentoring, and infrastructure development. This experience provides a strong foundation for my role as director and mentor for the research proposed by Dr. Byron Lai, with whom I have collaborated for over 12 years.
