Dr. Matiyar Rahaman Khan did his M.Sc. and, Ph.D. in Nematology from the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), New Delhi. Dr. Khan has been successful in his pioneering work to identify foliar nematode problems in tuberose in West Bengal and to develop a management strategy. Dr. Khan also paid considerable attention to the taxonomy of major phytonematodes in India and their mapping, which were essential for understanding plant-nematode interactions and designing their management. He put a lot of effort into gathering information on nematodes, and the ICAR published his Nematode Distribution Atlas in 2010. Dr. Khan also conceptualized an innovative approach for a mass awareness campaign on phytonematodes by observing ‘Nematode Awareness Day’ every year on July 7th, 2006. Dr. Khan started his research work at Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya (BCKV), Kalyani, where he was promoted to Professor of Agricultural Entomology (2012–2015), Group Leader, and Project In-Charge of AICRP-Nematodes (ICAR). He is a recipient of the Young Scientist Award 2005 and Award Fellowships from different societies and academies in recognition of his contributions in the areas of nematode biosystematics and management of phytonematodes. He has published more than 120 research papers in national and International journals, contributed several book chapters, and written many popular articles in Bengali as well as in English. He has guided 13 M.Sc. and 13 Ph.D. scholars. He served as Professor in the Division of Nematology, IAR, New Delhi, from 2018–2023.
