About
Dr. Subham Mukherjee is a Soil Scientist in the Agricultural Research Service (ARS), ICAR-Mahatma Gandhi Integrated Farming Research Institute, Bihar, India, with academic and professional expertise spanning soil chemistry, soil physics, water management, soil survey, and remote sensing–GIS–based digital soil mapping. Born in Bolpur, Birbhum (West Bengal), he has consistently excelled throughout his academic career, securing first-class distinctions in all stages from school to doctoral studies.
He completed his B.Sc. in Agriculture from Palli Siksha Bhavana, Visva-Bharati (2015), followed by an M.Sc. in Soil Science from Punjab Agricultural University (2017), where he was awarded the ICAR–Junior Research Fellowship (AIR 28) and a Certificate of Merit for academic excellence. He subsequently earned his Ph.D. in Agricultural Chemistry and Soil Science from Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya (2022), supported by the prestigious ICAR–Senior Research Fellowship (AIR 1).
Dr. Mukherjee’s research contributions span conservation agriculture, phosphorus dynamics, soil moisture stress, and sustainable water and nutrient management in pulse-based cropping systems. His M.Sc. work established the role of rice-residue biochar in enhancing phosphorus availability across contrasting soils, while his doctoral research demonstrated how conservation tillage, irrigation, and phosphorus management can mitigate water stress and enhance chickpea productivity in the Lower Gangetic Plains.
Professionally, he has worked as an Assistant Field Officer at the Soil and Land Use Survey of India, Kolkata, for almost 3.5 years, where he conducted detailed soil surveys across multiple districts of West Bengal, prepared thematic and land suitability maps using satellite imagery, and authored 15 detailed soil survey reports.
He has published influential research papers in high-impact journals such as Agricultural Water Management, Archives of Agronomy and Soil Science, and International Journal of Environmental Science and Technology. His additional scholarly contributions include book chapters on conservation agriculture and resource conservation technologies, and he is a co-author of the reference book Comprehensive Soil Science.
Dr. Mukherjee has also undergone specialized training in “Remote Sensing and GIS in Digital Soil Mapping” conducted by the National Remote Sensing Centre (ISRO), Hyderabad. His broader research interests include conservation agriculture, carbon and nutrient cycling, soil physical health, and advanced soil carbon mapping.
Beyond academics, he enjoys playing cricket and takes a keen interest in developing practical, field-oriented soil management solutions that enhance sustainability, resilience, and farmer profitability.
