About

Broad area of research: Atmospheric Sciences; Atmospheric Aerosol Science; Air Quality and the Environment; Climate Change Research group: Prof. Ristovski is leading a large research group, including 2 academics, 2 Postdoctoral Fellows and over 10 Postgraduate students.

Main research areas:
Nanoparticle emission from internal combustion engines.
Developing new methodologies to improve our understanding of the health effects of airborne nanoparticles.
Developing new tools to improve our understanding of the climate effects of airborne nanoparticles.

Nanoparticle emission from internal combustion engines: This is one of the more active areas of his group. Most of the research is now realised within the Biofuels Engine Research Facility (BERF) in collaboration with the group of Prof. Richard Brown. BERF is a modern engine research facility with the capabilities of running diesel engines on various fuels (dual fuel capabilities, Ethanol fumigation, LPG, Hydrogen, Biodiesel, etc.). It has the state of the art engine emission testing equipment. The main focus of this area is in developing understanding on the relationship between fuel composition and physical, chemical and toxicological properties of both primary and secondary particles emitted from combustion engines.

Developing new methodologies to improve our understanding of the health effects of airborne nanoparticles: The main focus of this research area is in the development and application of new methods for the measurement of the oxidative capacity of nanoparticles and is centered around the application of new Profluorescent Nitroxide (PFN) chemical probes. A real time Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) monitor is being developed. This research is done in collaboration with Prof. Steven Bottle’s group.
