About

Dr Joydeep Chakraborty has been awarded a PhD by Bankura University, India, in the field of post-9/11 American poetry. His doctoral project examines, through soul-searching and identity crisis, the problematic relationship between ideology and a part of post-9/11 poetics, the way of moving beyond the trauma of 9/11, the way of simultaneously invoking and transcending “post-humanism,” and the lack of cognitive certitude as a viable poetic strategy in the “post-truth” social climate. This project primarily belongs to the field of American literature. However, being interdisciplinary, it is also connected to political science, history, and sociology. In 2023, the project was shortlisted for the Obama Dissertation Prize for Transnational American Studies to be awarded by the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz, Germany.

Dr. Chakraborty is a highly motivated and enthusiastic researcher with nine years of research experience in the fields of 21st-century American poetry and post-9/11 American poetry. Currently, he has seventeen international publications (including the upcoming ones) and conference presentations, some of which have been acclaimed by reputed British, Australian, and Canadian scholars like Prof. Graham Holderness of the University of Hertfordshire (Britain), Dr. Jean-Francois Vernay (French-Australian scholar of Torrens University, Australia), and Prof. Simon Adam of York University (Canada). In his research projects, he has repeatedly focused on American poetry, history, politics, culture, and poetics; 21st-century American poetry and identity; and 21st-century American poetry and ecology from innovative, interdisciplinary perspectives.

His notable journal articles include ‘‘Hallucinations in Post-9/11 American Poetry: Trauma and Beyond" (published in Critical Survey 33, no. 3–4 [2021], a peer-reviewed article), “‘To Say What Could Not Be Said’: Crisis and Post-9/11 Metapoetry" (Critical Survey, vol. 35, no. 3, 2023, pp. 111-128; a peer-reviewed article), and so on. He also won the MLA Annual Convention Travel Grant 2021 and the MLA Graduate Student Lounge Door Prize for his thesis presentation at the MLA Annual Convention 2021. One of his papers, ‘Hospitality in Post-9/11 American Poetry: From Multiculturalism to Post-multiculturalism,’ was presented at the annual conference of the British Association for American Studies in April 2022 at the University of Hull, UK. Moreover, he is a commissioned book reviewer for the Journal of American Studies (published by Cambridge University Press).

Dr. Chakraborty is currently competing for postdoctoral fellowships. His postdoctoral project (titled “Spatiality in 21st Century American Poetry: A Phenomenology of Geo-Political, Gendered, Ecopoetic, and Embodied Spaces”) has been highly appreciated by Prof. Agnieszka Soltysik Monnet of the University of Lausanne (Switzerland) and many faculty members in the Department of English and Scottish Literature at Edinburgh University, including Dr. Martin Schauss, Dr. Hannah Boast, Dr. Patrick Errington, and Prof. Alan Gillis.
