About
After completing M.Sc. in Analytical Chemistry in 2007, I started my research career as a Research Fellow at the Department of Chemistry, University of Kalyani in a research project entitled “Role of microbiogeochemical processes in mobilization of arsenic in the aquifer sediments of the Bengal Delta Plain (BDP): an experimental approach”. This project was in collaboration with Institute of Geochemistry and Mineralogy, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Karlsruhe, Germany, funded by German Research Foundation (DFG) and Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, Germany (BMZ). In 2010, I was the recipient of European Union’s Erasmus Mundus Doctoral scholarship for PhD study at the Division of Land and Water Resources Engineering, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden. During my PhD study also, the research was focused on “Arsenic Geochemistry and targeting safe aquifers for drinking water supply in an arsenic affected regions of Bengal Basin”. In addition, I was also partly involved in another project, which had investigated the risk of arsenic exposure from rice and other dietary component in rural Bengal. I completed my PhD on 23rd September 2013. After completion of PhD, I had completed one year postdoctoral research at the Department of Geological Sciences, University of Saskatchewan, Canada from February 2014. This postdoctoral research was focused on “Arsenic, selenium, cadmium and zinc mobilization from coal waste rock piles into coal mining watersheds”. In November 2014, I have been awarded Alexander von Humboldt Postdoctoral Research Fellowship and joined the Department of Environmental Geochemistry, University of Bayreuth, Bayreuth, Germany in May 2015. This postdoctoral research is focused on “Interaction of thiolated arsenic species with natural organic matter: Implications for arsenic mobility in reducing environments”.
During these years of intensive research I have developed my knowledge and skills in interdisciplinary research area at the boundaries with Chemistry, Earth Science and Environmental Science. I have developed skills on water and aquifer sediment sampling, and their analysis in the field and laboratory using different advanced analytical techniques. I have also the experience of working with Synchrotron Light at National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS I), Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL), NY, USA and Canadian Light Source (CLS), Saskatoon, Canada for the speciation of arsenic, iron, selenium, cadmium and molybdenum in soils and aquifer sediments. I have also developed skills on numerous modeling tools, such as Geochemical Modeling (e.g. speciation modeling, surface complexation modeling, 1D reactive transport modeling, and inverse geochemical modeling) by Visual MINTEQ and PHREEQC and subsurface 3D Litho-Stratigraphic Modeling by RockWorks. I have also attended some advance courses, such as Environmental Impact assessment; Statistical Analysis of Geological Data; Geoscientific Analytical Methods; Environmental Data; Geochemical Modelling with Visual MINTEQ; XANES Short Course: Theory, Analysis and Applications and Synchrotron Hard X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy etc. at different universities in Sweden, USA and Canada. These courses further provided me the opportunity to develop my interdisciplinary research compatibility.
As is reflected in my educational background and work experience, I am interested in environmental geochemistry for future research career, specifically looking at the cycling of trace elements and contaminant transport in the natural and anthropogenically polluted environments and management of the groundwater resources. I want to be a leading scientist in the field of aqueous environmental geochemistry.
