About
Dr. John Philip earned his Ph.D. from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) in 1992, followed by five years of postdoctoral research at CNRS (France) and the University of Hull (UK). Until May 2024, he served as Associate Director at the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR), Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India, and as a Professor at the Homi Bhabha National Institute. He is an elected Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, India, and currently serves as an Emeritus Professor in the Department of Physics, Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT).
Dr. Philip has published over 340 research papers in leading international journals and holds six patents. With an H-index of 73, 23,350+ citations, and a cumulative impact factor of ~1350, his pioneering contributions to materials science and nanotechnology have gained international recognition. He has been consistently listed among the World’s Top 2% Scientists by Stanford University (USA).
He has delivered 210+ invited talks worldwide, served as chief guest at numerous scientific events, and received multiple prestigious awards, including the Science and Technology Excellence Award (presented by Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam), INS Medal, NDT Man of the Year Award, and MRSI Gold Medal, Ron Halmshaw Award (British Institute of NDT), Distinguished Faculty Award, and Homi Bhabha Science and Technology Award (the highest distinction of the Department of Atomic Energy). He has also received international research fellowships from Japan, Switzerland, France, and Sweden.
A pioneer in ferrofluid research, Dr. Philip established one of India’s most active research programs in the field, supported by the largest-ever BRNS prospective research grant (₹5.6 crore) in 2000. His work has had a profound national and global impact and has been featured in Nature, Nanotech Web (UK), The Hindu, and The Indian Express.
Dr. Philip was the Founding Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Nanofluids (American Scientific Publishers) and serves on the editorial boards of several international journals. He has also contributed to national research and academic governance as a Research Council Member at ARCI (DST Hyderabad) and two CSIR National Laboratories, Member of the Scientific Advisory Committee of SHRI (DST), Academic Council Member at Hindustan University, and Member of the Bureau of Indian Standards.
He has supervised 24 Ph.D. scholars, inspiring the next generation of scientists and innovators in materials science and nanotechnology.
