About
Dr. Saumitra Yadav is a Senior Scientist in the Department of Neuroscience at Washington University School of Medicine. Trained as a physicist and optical engineer, his research sits at the intersection of nano-optics, neurophotonics, and systems neuroscience driven by a fundamental curiosity about how neural circuits process and encode information.
Dr. Yadav earned his Ph.D. in Nanoscience and Engineering from the Indian Institute of Science in 2019, where his doctoral work explored nonlinear light-matter interactions in 3D metamaterials,waveguide-integrated photodetectors, and functional imaging of living cells with particular focus on brain and cardiac tissue. He holds a B.E. in Biotechnology from the Netaji Subhas Institute of Technology (2011), completed on an academic excellence merit scholarship. His research trajectory has been notably broad, encompassing multiphoton microscopy in neuroscience and nanoscience, phylogenetic analyses of Toxin-Antitoxin modules in Bacillus anthracis, and investigations into the structural and functional roles of non-structural protein 2 in the Chikungunya virus.
Building on this foundation, Dr. Yadav conducted his postdoctoral research at the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering at Purdue University, where he combined two-photon microscopy and electrophysiology to map synaptic, dendritic, and recurrent circuit dynamics in vitro and in vivo. This work deepened his expertise in translating cutting-edge electro-optic technologies into powerful neuroscience tools enabling direct observation of how individual cells and neural circuits compute and communicate within the living brain.
Across these pursuits, Dr. Yadav brings deep expertise in advanced optical neurotechnologies, photonics, sensory perception, and machine learning. His work is guided by a commitment to bridging engineering and the life sciences developing innovative optical tools and harnessing big data analytics to decode the complexity of neural circuits and their computational roles. Ultimately, he aims to translate these advances into new strategies for understanding and treating neurological disorders.
Dr. Yadav holds the distinguished rank of Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), with affiliations across the Photonics Society, Signal Processing Society, and Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society. He also serves as an ad-hoc reviewer for several leading academic journals.
