Tarun S. Sharma

About

Dr. Sharma is a physician-scientist whose research career has focused on the pharmaco-epidemiology of rheumatologic disease, most notably focused on rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and gout. As Director of the Rheumatoid Arthritis Center of Excellence and RA Clinical Pathway Program at the Allegheny Health Network’s Autoimmunity Institute, Dr.Sharma has led the efforts to develop a well-defined cohort of RA patients and transform RA care delivery by implementing RA best practices alongside team-based care to address social determinants of health. Dr.Sharma has a well-defined subset of early RA patients within the Care Pathway cohort with longitudinal data on social determinants and time to remission. He has studied the impact of social determinants on RA disease activity within this cohort and presented his findings at the American College of Rheumatology 2023 annual meeting. He has been collaborating with investigators at Penn State Hershey Medical Center over last 2 years to expand his RA cohort with help of a seed grant award. He hopes to expand the study on social determinants within his subset of patients with early RA by collaborating efforts with the same team at Penn State Rheumatology. Dr.Sharma's other research focus has been medication tapering in patients with stable RA in remission to assess outcomes of long term use of immune suppressing treatments. Dr.Sharma is Associate Professor at Drexel University College of Medicine and has mentored several trainees as Associate Program Director of the AHN rheumatology fellowship program.
