About
Dr Mashudu Nemukula is a Lecturer in the Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology at Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU), Pretoria, South Africa, who holds a PhD in Biochemistry specializing in cardiometabolic disease research. His academic and research work focuses on lipidomics, lipoprotein metabolism, and the molecular mechanisms underlying atherosclerosis in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM), with a particular emphasis on LDL subclasses, ApoE gene polymorphisms, and cardiometabolic risk in Black South African populations.
His doctoral research integrates advanced analytical platforms, including NMR-based metabolomics, lipoprotein subclass profiling, and molecular genetics, to improve cardiovascular risk stratification beyond conventional lipid measures. He has extensive experience in experimental design, biostatistics, and translational biomedical research, with additional expertise in flow cytometry and biochemical assay development.
Dr Nemukula is an International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB) Junior Doctoral Fellow, having undertaken a six-month research fellowship at ICGEB New Delhi under the Transcription Regulation Group. Through this fellowship and other international collaborations, he actively contributes to capacity building and the strengthening of global research partnerships between South Africa and international research institutions.
In addition to his research activities, Dr Nemukula is actively involved in postgraduate supervision, curriculum development, and institutional governance. He serves as a council member at SMU and participates in several strategic and academic committees, contributing to research development, innovation, and transformation within higher education. He is also engaged in developing diagnostic platforms and assay-based approaches for cardiometabolic disease monitoring, reflecting his interest in translational and entrepreneurial biotechnology.
Dr Nemukula has authored and co-authored multiple peer-reviewed publications and is currently involved in several multidisciplinary research projects spanning lipidomics, metabolomics, phytochemistry, and cardiovascular disease. His long-term research vision is to advance precision medicine approaches for cardiometabolic diseases in African populations while fostering sustainable research ecosystems through mentorship, collaboration, and innovation.
