About

Eduardo Cires is an Associate Professor in the Department of Organism and Systems Biology at the University of Oviedo and a Researcher at the Institute of Natural Resources and Land Management (INDUROT, Spain). He began his research career in 2004 at the Atlantic Botanical Garden of Gijón, where he participated in projects focused on vascular plant diversity and conservation, as well as vegetation mapping and management using Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

He obtained his PhD in Biology from the University of Oviedo in 2011, earning the European Doctorate distinction, the Extraordinary Doctorate Award, and the highest qualification (summa cum laude with unanimous distinction). His research focuses on plant systematics and evolution, conservation biology, biodiversity management, biological invasions, phylogeography, molecular systematics, taxonomy, and population genetics.

His scientific output includes the authorship of 18 plant taxa and more than 200 scientific publications. Throughout his career, he has combined research with active participation in scientific societies and biodiversity conservation initiatives. He has also held postdoctoral research positions at internationally renowned institutions, including Ghent University and VIB (Belgium), the Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA), and the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU, Vienna).

Since joining the University of Oviedo as an Assistant Professor in 2015, he has progressed through successive academic ranks to his current position as Associate Professor. He teaches undergraduate and postgraduate courses in both English and Spanish and supervises students undertaking external internships and research projects.

From 2021 to 2025, he served as a member of the Scientific Council of the Spanish Committee of UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere (MaB) Programme, appointed by the Spanish Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge. He is also actively involved in science communication through numerous outreach initiatives organised by the University of Oviedo’s Unit for Culture and Scientific Innovation (UCC+i), including the European Researchers’ Night, Science Week, and other public engagement activities. In addition, he has contributed to lifelong learning programmes and organised university extension and doctoral training courses.

His commitment to promoting Biological Sciences among younger generations is reflected in his long-standing involvement with the Spanish Biology Olympiad. He has served as the organiser of the Asturian Biology Olympiad since 2017 and has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Spanish Biology Olympiad since 2020, currently holding the position of Vice-President.
