About
Myself, Dr. Deepak Jose is a dedicated molecular taxonomist serving as a Scientist at the CSIR-National Institute of Oceanography (CSIR-NIO), India. With a PhD and postdoctoral training (DBT Research Associateship), my academic and research career is grounded in the exploration of aquatic biodiversity through molecular and genomic approaches. My primary areas of expertise include molecular taxonomy, invertebrate systematics, crustacean genomics, metagenomics, gene expression studies etc. My scientific pursuits span marine, estuarine, and freshwater ecosystems, with prime focus on resolving taxonomic ambiguities, uncovering cryptic diversity, and applying molecular tools to enhance biodiversity assessment and conservation.
Through my career, I had contributed to major national and international research projects. Notable among these is the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES)-funded project on deep-sea crustaceans, where I integrated classical taxonomy with molecular markers to document and understand deep-sea biodiversity. I was also awarded the prestigious DBT Research Associateship, under which I conducted gene expression studies in Macrobrachium rosenbergii, a key freshwater prawn species important to Indian aquaculture. My research provided insights into genes linked to growth, immunity, and reproduction, supporting improved aquaculture management. My recent research work also includes molecular studies on Arctic meiofauna, expanding our understanding of benthic biodiversity in polar ecosystems.
Internationally, I was awarded with the Scientific High-Level Research Fellowship and conducted research in France at the University of Montpellier. This experience enhanced my global scientific exposure and allowed me to collaborate with leading researchers on evolutionary biology and systematics. My research contributions are well-reflected in my publications focused on molecular taxonomy and allied fields, which have helped establish genetic baselines for several aquatic taxa in India.
Passionate about integrative science, I envisions building comprehensive molecular reference databases for India’s aquatic fauna, developing biodiversity monitoring frameworks, and advancing sustainable aquaculture practices.
