About
Dr Praveen Sharma qualified as a dentist from the University of Birmingham in 2007, returning in 2011 as an Academic Clinical Fellow in Restorative Dentistry. He was Birmingham Dental Hospital’s first Academic Clinical Fellow. His research interests revolve around the links between periodontal and systemic disease, particularly chronic kidney disease. His research has won him several national awards and he has presented his findings as oral presentations at inter/national dental and medical conferences.
Praveen was awarded the prestigious NIHR-DRF (National Institute for Health Research-Doctoral Research Fellowship), in 2014, another first for the Birmingham Dental School. This allowed him to take time out of his clinical consultant training in Restorative Dentistry, to focus on his research and research training. During this period, Praveen attended several training courses, focussed on epidemiology, statistics, health economics and medical decision making. He attended the Erasmus Winter Programme in 2016. This was a 3 week residential course in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, with courses in biostatistics and clinical trial methods. He attended the Harvard Summer School (Program in Clinical Effectiveness) in 2017. This was a 7 week course organised by Harvard School of Public Health. Topics included
1) Introduction to Clinical Epidemiology
2) Introduction to statistics for medical research
3) Statistics for medical research
4) Linear and Longitudinal regression
5) Decision analysis in clinical research
6) Methods for Decision Making in Medicine (including health economic evaluation)
He received his doctorate (PhD) in 2019 and is currently a Clinical Lecturer in Restorative Dentistry at the University of Birmingham’s School of Dentistry. He has resumed his clinical consultant training in Restorative Dentistry.
Dr Sharma is continuing with his research in the periodontal-systemic disease link and is exploring other, exciting research avenues. He continues to review for and publish in, high quality medical and dental journals as well as presenting his work in inter/national conferences.
Dr Sharma provides teaching in the form of lectures to undergraduate dental, nursing and hygiene and therapy students the speciality of Periodontology. He also supervises the clinical care delivered by dental undergraduate students and obtained his teaching qualification (FHEA) in 2016.
