About

Dr. Sachin Kumar Sharma is working as Associate Professor at the Centre for WTO Studies (CWS) under Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Govt. of India since November 2009. He has more than 12 years of work experience with progressive responsibilities as an economist and trade expert, both at multilateral and regional levels. After completing his Ph.D. in Economics from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, he worked as a Consultant with United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Planning Commission of India on a project titled, “National Human Development Report”. He was awarded the UGC Junior and Senior Research Fellowship (JRF/ SRF) and has been undertaking research on various issues related to WTO, international trade and agriculture negotiations.

At the CWS, Dr. Sharma leads a dedicated team of lawyers and economists working on the international trade issues with key focus on agriculture. Currently, his research focuses on issues related to agricultural subsidies, food security, SDGs, FTAs and disputes, among others. He regularly advises negotiators, government officials, farmer associations, and other stakeholders on diverse range of issues concerning trade and agriculture. He is also responsible for preparing WTO agriculture notifications on behalf of India and has also contributed significantly to many proposals tabled at the WTO, both by India and G33. He has provided strategic inputs to India and other developing countries and LDCs to develop negotiating positions on agriculture issues. Beside this, he is also a member of several committees on WTO and Agriculture. Presently, he is involved as an economist in disputes concerning India’s sugar policy at the WTO.

Dr. Sharma has presented his research in various national and international conferences/seminars/workshops. He has delivered lectures on international trade and agriculture in various specialized training programmes conducted for bureaucrats, foreign delegates and other stakeholders organized by Government of India, World Bank, IFPRI, ITC, UNESCAP, G-33, South Centre, Action Aid, think tanks and academic institutions. He organized/participated as a resource person in many capacity building programmes conducted for developing countries and LDCs by CWS in which more than 150 officials including negotiators are trained annually.

He is proficient in Computable General Equilibrium Modelling, econometrics and other statistical tools. Using these, he has evaluated economic impact of FTAs like TPP, RCEP, BRICS, India-Peru FTA, India-EU, India-EFTA. He has authored many policy briefs, reports and studies for different ministries of Government of India, international organizations, think tanks, civil society and academic institutions. He also has collaborated with experts from many national and international organizations and universities for research and outreach programmes.

He has published many articles in peered reviewed journals and authored/edited books on international trade and agriculture. His book titled “WTO and Food Security” that analyzed food security policies of developing countries and LDCs under WTO received global acclaim.
