About

Education and Experience
Prof. O. P. Mishra joined Institute of Medical Sciences (IMS), Banaras Hindu University (BHU) as an undergraduate student in 1977 and completed MD Pediatrics in 1986. Thereafter, he served as Senior Resident from 1986-1989, and subsequently appointed as Lecturer in 1990, Reader/Associate Professor from 1999 to 2007, Professor from 2007 to 2018 and Senior Professor from 2018 to June, 2021.He superannuated in 2021 as Dean Research & Senior Professor of Pediatrics. During this period, he supervised 50 MD/DM/PhD scholars. He published 227 research papers (Citations 3598, h-index 36, i10 index 88) in various International and National journals, and also edited one book, Nelson Essentials of Pediatrics, published in 2016 by ELSEVIER, USA, He has been Head, Department of Pediatrics (2006-2009) and expanded the Department of Pediatrics in infrastructure and clinical services and created a New Pediatric Building and developed various Pediatric Superspecialists
His specialty is Pediatric Nephrology and created Division of Pediatric Nephrology, the only center in government setup between New Delhi and Kolkata, and has been In Charge of the Division (2015-2021). The division has provided comprehensive care to children suffering from various kidney diseases including Pediatric Dialysis facilities. There has been about 3000 patients in follow-up from about 22 crores population belonging to Eastern UP, North and Western Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and adjoining country Nepal.
He has also served as Dean Research (2021-2023) and Head, Department of Pediatrics at Heritage Institute of Medical Sciences, Varanasi (2021-2026), and continuing Clinical, Teaching and Research services as Emeritus Professor since 1st February, 2026.

Awards and Honours
He has been the recipient of the Fellow, Indian Academy of Pediatrics (FIAP) in 2008, Fellow, National Academy of Medical Sciences (FAMS) in 2015, and also Indian National Science Academy and INSA-DFG & DAAD Fellowships for the advanced training in Pediatric Nephrology in Germany at University Medical Centers of Heidelberg (2006, 2008, 2016, 2018) and Freiburg (2010). He has been President of the Indian Society of Pediatric Nephrology (2019-2021), and the co-author in the publications of many Consensus Guidelines for different Pediatric Kidney Diseases especially Nephrotic Syndrome , Hemolytic uremic syndrome and Managing Renal Diseases during COVID-19 Pandemic.

Besides this, he has also been awarded Best Medical Teacher by the Indian Medical Association, of UP, Academic Excellence Award (four times) by IMS, BHU, and Dr. J.R. Srivastava Gold Medal Award for best research papers in Pediatrics twice. Currently, he has been Section Editor of the journal -Pediatric Nephrology on Immunology/Glomerular Disease for the last 5 years. He has been Visiting Faculty at B P Koirala Institute of Health Sciences, Nepal, and School of Health Sciences, University of Technology, Mauritius.
He was the Coordinator from IMS, BHU, to the erstwhile MCI/NMC and helped in 51 assessments for recognition and increase of seats in MBBS, MD/MS and DM/MCh courses of IMS. In addition to this, he also served as Coordinator from the MCI/NMC side in assessments of 125 medical colleges/ institutions in the country.
Current Assignments and Activities
He is presently serving as Emeritus Professor and In Charge, Division of Pediatric Nephrology at Department of Pediatrics, Heritage Institute of Medical Sciences, Varanasi. He is presently providing health care to ailing children with different kidney diseases in this region of the country.
He is also Chairperson of the Institutional Ethics Committee of IMS, BHU, Varanasi, Maa Vindhyavasini Autonomous Government Medical College, Mirzapur and Autonomous State Medical College, Gonda, UP.
He is presently Member, Executive Council of Baba Gulam Shah Badshah University, Rajouri in Jammu and Kashmir.

Future Mission
His mission is to provide specialty training to at least 1000 young Pediatricians and Pediatric Nephrologists across the country in the field of Pediatric Dialysis for children suffering from kidney failure. He has developed a training module for this, named ‘Pediatric Dialysis and Therapeutic Apheresis Module for Emergency (PD-TAME) with another colleague Prof. Abhijeet Saha, New Delhi,
He has already conducted training at Lady Hardinge Medical College, New Delhi, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Raipur, King Georges Medical University, Lucknow, Government Medical College , Jammu and Shri Guru Ram Rai Institute of Medical and Health Sciences, Dehradun. Further training courses shall be done at several premier medical colleges/ institutions of the country in 2026-2027.
