About
Eric Guévélou obtained his PhD in Marine Biology in 2012 from the University of Western Brittany (France). He has more than 15 years of experience in shellfish aquaculture, with a strong understanding of both academic research and industrial production. Eric holds five academic diplomas spanning medical and marine sciences. He began his scientific career between 2003 and 2005 with a laboratory technician training in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Western Brittany (France). In 2005–2006, he obtained an advanced diploma as a specialized laboratory technician in Ingredients Engineering for Cosmetics and Health Products at the University of South Brittany (France). In 2006–2007, he completed a Bachelor’s degree in Biology, specialized in Biology of Organisms and Populations, at the University of Western Brittany (France). Between 2007 and 2009, Eric completed a Master’s degree in Genetics, Genomics, and Biotechnology, followed by a PhD in Marine Biology (2009–2012) at the University of Western Brittany and Ifremer (France). His Master’s and PhD research focused on physiology of the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas. Driven by a strong interest in applied research and shellfish aquaculture, Eric worked as a Post-doctoral Research Associate (2015–2019) at the Aquaculture Genetics and Breeding Technology Center (ABC) at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS, USA). In 2019, he was promoted to Senior Marine Scientist at ABC. During his time there, he was involved in several major projects, including: - the investigation of gametogenic characteristics of triploid oysters (Crassostrea virginica) and the relationship between reproductive effort and mortality in the lower Chesapeake Bay; - the development of near-infrared reflectance (NIR) spectroscopy models to quantify physiological parameters such as glycogen, lipids, and the presence of Perkinsus marinus; - participation in ABC’s efforts to improve oyster aquaculture through research conducted in hatcheries, laboratories, and field sites. Since 2020, Eric has been working as Production R&D Manager at Oceano Fresco (Portugal). In this role, he leads applied research and development programs supporting commercial shellfish production, with a focus on clams (Venerupis corrugata, Ruditapes decussatus) and oysters (Ostrea edulis). His work spans selective breeding, hatchery and nursery optimization, experimental design, system evaluation, and the transfer of scientific knowledge into operational practices. He coordinates multidisciplinary teams and external collaborations, contributing to the scaling of research outcomes under real production conditions. Eric’s research relies on biochemistry, molecular, and cellular biology tools to investigate physiological mechanisms involved in energy management. He also has strong technical expertise in fieldwork, experimental design, hatchery cultivation of larvae and seed, and microalgae production. He has published more than 10 articles in SCI journals and has participated in several international scientific conferences.
