About
Dr. Sofia Bashir Mohamed Ali is an Associate Professor of Molecular Biology and Bioinformatics with more than 15 years of experience in pathogen genomics, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and genomic surveillance system development. She is the Director and Co-Founder of the National University Biomedical Research Institute (NUBRI), Sudan, where she leads initiatives to establish genomic surveillance and bioinformatics infrastructure supporting infectious disease research and public health programs.
Her research focuses on the application of whole-genome sequencing (WGS), molecular epidemiology, and bioinformatics to investigate microbial evolution, antimicrobial resistance mechanisms, and pathogen transmission dynamics. She has extensive experience in next-generation sequencing technologies and downstream genomic analyses, including mutation detection, comparative genomics, and genotype–phenotype integration.
Dr. Ali founded Galaxy-NUBRI and VBCRI-Sudan, digital research platforms designed to enable standardized, reproducible, and interoperable genomic analysis workflows and strengthen genomic research capacity in low- and middle-income countries. Her work integrates microbial genomics, mutation analysis, and genomic data interpretation to support infectious disease surveillance and evidence-based decision making.
In addition to pathogen genomics, her research includes computational drug discovery and structural bioinformatics. As a DAR Research Fellow at Qatar University, she is leading a research project focused on computational discovery of novel therapeutic compounds targeting breast cancer–associated genes, using mutation analysis, molecular docking, and structure-based drug design approaches.
She has trained and mentored hundreds of researchers and health professionals in genomics, bioinformatics, and molecular epidemiology, contributing to the development of sustainable scientific capacity and genomic surveillance systems in resource-constrained settings
