About

My research interests is in quality control of crude drugs/products, chemotaxonomy, bio-prospection of medicinal plants, and the development of herbal products. My research includes collecting herbs from wild sources, botanical identification, extraction/activity-guided fractionation, in-vitro chemical assays, development of scientifically validated and standardized herbal formulation, and chemotaxonomic studies of highly valued medicinal plants. I am well versed in extraction, isolation, and characterization of active markers/phytomolecules from plants using sophisticated analytical techniques like OPLC, HPTLC, HPLC, GLC, Spectrophotometer, AAS, etc. and also gained expertise in BRS (Botanical Reference Standard, Microscopy and Herbarium techniques. I have made contributions to the development of monographs of more than 5 single (crude) herbs and also identified biomarkers for their quality control, which are expected to find a place in The Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India, A Govt. gazette published by the Ministry of AYUSH. On working in chemotaxonomic studies on medicinal crops, I made a contribution by identifying the best chemotypes of Gloriosa superba and Coleus forskohlii which are under the process of registration from NBPGR.
I have also conducted more than fifteen field trips to collect medicinal plants from various phytogeographical zones of the country required for different research activities. Besides these routine lab duties I have been engaged in herbal product development at the pharmacognosy division, CSIR-NBRI for the last 8 years as a lead researcher and in the team. As a lead researcher, I developed two herbal products viz. URO-5 for urolithiasis/nephrolithiasis and a supplement for gouty arthritis condition. The research work on a newer concept of primary dysmenorrheal was initiated for product development.
