About
Ahanjit Bhattacharya is an Assistant Professor of Chemistry and the Principal Investigator of the Chemical Synthetic Biology Laboratory at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Bhopal. Prior to his independent career, he carried out his doctoral research at the University of California San Diego under the guidance of Neal Devaraj and postdoctoral research in the lab of Steven Boxer at Stanford University. Currently, Ahanjit is training an interdisciplinary team comprising of students from Chemistry, Biology, and Physics backgrounds. Their broad vision is designing artificial cellular systems from fundamental chemical and biochemical building blocks. Ahanjit is a recipient of the inaugural ANRF Prime Minister-Early Career Research Grant (PM-ECRG). This grant will fund their research on the development on novel lipidic sponge phases which will find many applications in artificial cells development and membrane protein studies. His group is also studying structure-function relationships in archaeal bipolar lipids to shed light on cellular physiology of extremophilic archaea. In the future, his group will investigate biophysical mechanisms of membrane fusion and remodelling by enveloped viruses like influenza. Ahanjit has received several awards including his recognition as one of the CAS Future Leaders Top 100 (American Chemical Society, 2024), Postdoc Teaching Certificate (Stanford University, 2022), Reaxys PhD Prize Finalists (Elsevier, 2020), Prime Minister of India Gold Medal (IIT Kharagpur, 2014), Ahanjit enjoys teaching and is passionate about communicating science and making it a transformational force for betterment of society and humanity.
