About

Dr. Hemen Sarma is Professor and Head, Department of Botany, Bodoland University (BU), Kokrajhar, Assam, India. He was affiliated with the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), USA (2017–2018). He is a co-author of multiple The Lancet publications, including four landmark Global Burden of Disease 2023 (GBD 2023) studies, contributing evidence that informs national and global health-policy discussions on mortality trends, infectious-disease disruptions, and the growing burden of chronic diseases. He is a Fellow of the Linnean Society of London (FLS, 2022) and has been listed among the Stanford–Elsevier World’s Top 2% Scientists (2023–2025).

His research integrates biochar innovation, plant–microbe–materials science, environmental toxicology, and One Health–aligned environmental risk assessment. He leads projects funded by DBT, DST/ANRF-SERB, DBT-NER, and ASTEC, advancing sustainable agriculture, remediation of contaminated soils, and low-cost sensing of heavy metals in water. Internationally, he has strengthened BU’s collaborations through MoUs with Hokkaido University (Japan), the University of Naples Federico II (Italy), and the University of Dodoma (Tanzania). He served as a UNESCO–TWAS Visiting Expert (2024) and is a Visiting Fellow at Hokkaido University, Japan (2026).
