About
After doing my B.Sc. (Chemistry Hons), M.Sc. (Physical Chemistry) and M.Phil. and Ph.D. (Biophysical Chemistry), I had gone to North America where I took postdoctoral assignments in several institutes and universities. For instance, I was Visiting Fellow of the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland (USA) and Research Associate in University of Calgary and University of Manitoba (Canada). After staying 12 years in USA and Canada, I returned to India in 1987 and joined Department of Biosciences, Jamia Millia Islamia. During my stay in the Jamia I have received several awards and honors. To mention a few, I am Fellow of Indian National Science Academy, Fellow of National Academy of Science, Awardee of Pride of Delhi.
I had served the Jamia Millia Islamia as Head, Department of Chemistry; Head, Department of Biosciences; Director, Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Basic Sciences; Dean, Students’ Welfare; etc. And presently, I am INSA Honorary Scientist and Honorary Professor in Jamia Hamdard, New Delhi.
My major research work has been in the area of “Protein Folding Problem” with special interests in the development of methods for determination of protein stability and characterization of folding intermediates. In addition to these, I have been interested in understanding the mechanism of survival of living organisms under stress conditions with special interest to protein stabilisation by osmolytes in general, survival of kidney proteins under urea stress and survival of alcohol producing organisms during alcohol production.
