About
Dr. Rajesh Kumar is a physicist and materials scientist honored with the prestigious international "Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Award-2024" (in October 2024) by the Alexander von Humboldt (AvH) Foundation, Germany (Federal Ministry of Research, Technology, and Space: BMFTR), which annually recognizes 20 internationally renowned scholars for outstanding research contributions; in 2024, he was the sole recipient from India. In addition, he received the international "JSPS Invitational Fellowship (Long-term)" for FY2025 (December 2024) from the Government of Japan, a fellowship awarded to 60 exceptional overseas researchers each year to conduct collaborative research and engage in academic exchange with leading researchers in Japan. Dr. Kumar has also been recognized with other prestigious international fellowships, including JSPS Postdoctoral Fellow (Standard), Japan, FY2018; FAPESP (São Paulo Research Foundation) Fellowship, Brazil, 2017; Brain Korea-21 (BK-21+) Fellowship, South Korea, 2014; and the Ramanujan Fellowship, India, 2018.
Dr. Kumar completed his B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Physics (Condensed Matter Physics) from the University of Allahabad (UoA), Prayagraj, India, and earned his Ph.D. in Physics from the Department of Physics, Institute of Science, Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Varanasi, India. He has held research and academic positions at several leading international institutions, including Technical University of Darmstadt, Germany (Guest Scientist, Humboldt Fellow, Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Awardee, 2024; tenure commencing April 2025); Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur, India (Ramanujan Fellow, 2020–2025); Toyohashi University of Technology (TUT), Japan (JSPS Postdoctoral Fellow (Standard), 2018–2020); University of Campinas (UNICAMP), Brazil (CNPq Postdoctoral Fellow/Visiting Scientist, 2015–2017); State University of São Paulo (UNESP), Brazil (FAPESP Postdoctoral Fellow, 2018); Yonsei University, South Korea (Brain Korea 21+ Research Professor, 2014); and Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), South Korea (Postdoctoral Researcher, 2012–2014).
Currently, Dr. Rajesh Kumar is a Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Awardee (2024) of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Germany. He is affiliated with the Department of Materials Science, Technical University of Darmstadt, Darmstadt, Germany, as a Humboldt Fellow (Guest Scientist), where he is conducting research under the Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Award program. Dr. Kumar's research interests are focused on 2D layered materials (Graphene, MXenes, Layered double hydroxide, Hexagonal boron nitride, Molybdenum disulfide, Tungsten disulfide, etc.), carbon nanotubes (CNTs), quantum dots and their hybrid nanocomposites for major application in energy (storage/conversion), PEC water splitting, sensors, EMI shielding, etc. His research has developed several new class of composite-based electrodes that have been researched for effective energy storage purposes. His cutting-edge 2D composite-based functional materials have been developed for a wide variety of applications. Dr. Kumar's research combines a number of fields, including physics, material science, nanotechnology, chemistry, and biological sciences.
Dr. Kumar is a mid-career researcher and published more than 150 research articles in SCI international journals of repute. His h-index is 73 (with i10-index = 123), and citation counts are more than 15,000 (based on Google Scholar). The significant impact of his research is reflected by >100 citations for 50 of his publications, 20 of which have been cited >200 times. So far, he has delivered several invited talks at universities, research institutes, and scientific forums worldwide.
Dr. Kumar has been recognized as a “2024 & 2025 Highly Cited Researcher” (2 consecutive years) by Clarivate Analytics/Web of Science, in acknowledgment of his authorship of multiple Highly Cited Papers that rank in the top 1% by citations for their field and publication year in the Web of Science over the past decade. Also, he has been recognized among the World Ranking of top 2% Scientists in the global rankings released by Stanford University and Elsevier for six consecutive years (2020–2025).
