Prof. Militz is a distinguished Professor in wood biology, protection and technology and head of one of the leading wood science groups in Germany. Since 1990 he has been steering several working groups and bodies at international level in his area (e.g. IRG and ECWM) and has been participating or coordinating many EU research projects (approx. 30). He was the Chairman of the German wood preservation committee (FA Holzschutz) for 12 years (until 2021). He had been opponent of many national (approx. 70) and international (approx. 20) PhD´s in Germany, Sweden, Norway, Finland, France, Belgium, Estonia and The Netherlands. He started, built up and was director of SHR (wood research institute) in the Netherlands from 1990 until 2000. He has published more than 700 articles and has more than 5000 citations.

• 1987 – 1991 Leader of Department of Wood Technology at TNO Timber Research Institute, Delft, The Netherlands (areas wood technology, wood protection, wood drying)
• 1991 – 2000 Scientific director and founder of the SHR Timber Research Institute with 35 co-workers in the areas wood technology, wood preservation, wood modification, wood chemistry, adhesives, coatings, building products
• 1995 – 2002 Professor in Wood Science at the Agricultural University Wageningen, The Netherlands. Areas wood biotechnology, wood quality and wood durability, Teaching in the Forestry curriculum in areas wood quality and wood technology
• Since July 2000: Professor in Wood Biology and Wood Products at the Georg-August University Göttingen, Forestry Faculty. Main research areas: wood deterioration by fungi, wood protection, wood modification, wood quality, wood technology, wood composites.
• 2011-2017: Professor in Wood Science at the University of Life Sciences NMBU, Aas, Norway (20% professorship)
• 2017 - 2019: Advising Expert at InnoRenew Center of Excellence, Slovenia
