About

Hi, I am Vazhathtottathil Madhu (call me… MADHU), Graduated (B.Sc., 1990) and Post Graduated (M. Sc,1992) in Physics and also Graduated in Education (B. Ed,1993) from Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam, Kerala, India. I served as High School Science Teacher soon after my graduations until the year, 1995. In 1996, I joined for Master of Technology Course in Atmospheric Sciences in the Department of Atmospheric Sciences, Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT), India, the cradle from where I learned the difference of Weather and Climate (MTech, 1998). I also qualified NET in Earth Science (1999) and SET in Physics ( 2002). slowly, I realised that “Weather forecasting” is a tough job in the tropical region (Convective weather systems) compared to the Middle latitude (Frontal Weather systems) region, since the weather generating mechanisms are different over these regions. I became passionate about the weather science and continued my research in atmospheric sciences and I was awarded a Doctoral degree from the very same University (CUSAT) in 2005. At the end of my doctoral research, in 2004, I was selected for the Physics Lecturer in the Department of Higher Secondary Education, Government of Kerala, after a series of test and interview. Since teaching and research are my passionate job, I began teaching Physics for plus two (10+2) grade students (in 2005). While I was serving as a Physics Lecturer at the Higher Secondary Schools, Government of Kerala, I was selected as the Assistant Professor in the Department of Atmospheric Sciences, CUSAT in 2006, to teach Post Graduate students, M.Sc. (Meteorology), MTech. (Atmospheric Sciences) and also supervise the Doctoral research students (PhD) of the Department of Atmospheric Sciences. More than ten years of teaching and independent research experiences moulded me to the level that, I could showcase my research in the international conferences and workshops abroad. I had presented my research work in major conferences such as COSPAR, SPARC, QOS, JpGU etc. hosted in various countries (Italy, Canada, France, Scotland, New Zealand, South Korea, Japan and USA) with travel grant award and other expenses for the presentations. I also visited Foreign Universities (Bologna University (in 2008); Toronto University (in 2012); Otago University, Dunedin (in 2014) and research Labs such as NIWA in New Zealand (2014), ICTP in Trieste, Italy (2011), Auchencorth Moss GAW Station, Edinburg (2016), Meteo France (2017) , Korean Polar Research Institute (2017) and NASA-SOFIA facility (2018). My present interest in research is Atmospheric Ozone and Climate Interactions. I had already completed three funded projects in the study of ozone variability over the tropics during monsoon season based on ground-based measurements along with satellite and balloon soundings. Since the monsoon convections and circulation greatly affect the atmospheric compositions and its transport. I also had published journal articles and written a book titled “Role of Stratosphere in Weather and Climate” in 2010. After ten-year period of independent research and teaching experiences from the Department of Atmospheric Sciences, CUSAT, India, I joined as a Foreign Visiting Researcher (Designated Assistant Profesor) , in the Chemistry-Climate Modelling Laboratory of Prof. Kengo Sudo (an Expert in the field of Chemistry-Climate Modelling), Graduate School of Environmental Studies, Nagoya University, Japan (in 2017) to expand the horizon of my research interest for a period of two years (till March, 2019). At present, I work on Ozone variability associated with multi-time scale weather and climate oscillations (such as MJO, QBO, ENSO etc.) using the chemistry-climate model simulations, reanalysis and observations (upper air observations from ground-based balloon soundings, satellite etc). Being here in Nagoya University, I am fortunate enough to enjoy the research facility of the school and I could present my research output in various conferences and seminars in Japan and abroad (France, South Korea and the USA) and communicated a couple of research papers to the reputed Journals. Twenty years of teaching and research experience attracted me strongly toward this fascinating subject (Climate Science) and I would like to continue my research and spread the message of Global warming and Climate change issues and consequences to the general public and make them aware of their individual responsibility to the posterity. I could give many lectures at various colleges and schools during the World Environmental and Ozone day celebrations during the period of service as a teacher and researcher. Since weather science (Meteorology) is treated as a growing science, I would like to contribute new knowledge to the development of the subject and do more research in future for the benefit of the mankind by protecting the mother earth.
