About
Thota’s research is interdisciplinary, leveraging diverse methods tackling SDGs 7 and 13 impacting SDGs 3, 9, and 12. He is interested in reducing energy demand and carbon emissions, and the transition to zero carbon energy systems. This includes the integration of renewable energy into energy systems, energy market reform, integrate tools and insights from other disciplines including air quality, data science, and artificial intelligence.
He breaks his research down to four pillars:
1) Biofuels 2) Carbon Nanomaterials 3) Energy devices 4) Air Quality
1) 2G Biofuels: Expert in second generation biofuels. Skilled in bioconversion, Solid and Submerged state fermentation, anaerobic and aerobic fermentation, Enzyme hydrolysis, cellulolytic enzymes, bio-catalysis.
2) 0-D Carbon Nanomaterials: Zero-dimensional fluorescent Carbon dots, hydrothermal carbonization Bioimaging, F-inks, Chemical sensing, toxicity studies, up conversion, FACS.
3) Energy: PEMFCs, Lignin, Carbon Nanofibers, Supercapacitors, active materials synthesis, electrode formulation, 2,3- electrode preparation, CV, GCCD, Impedance spectroscopy, Characterizations.
4) Air Quality assessment: trends and variability in PM2.5 and PM10 using low-cost sensors. He uses real-time high-quality ground-based observations, study sources and sinks, on various temporal and geographical scales. Dr. Thota and his group partners with RTI International as part of NASA’s Air Quality citizen science program, to tackle pressing GHG emissions.
