About
I am an earthquake geologist primarily interested in mapping active faults and quantifying the size and frequency of paleoearthquakes that occur along these faults, as well as the extent and intensity of the damage associated with historical and recent damaging earthquakes from different tectonic settings. I am also interested in studying the long-term slip rate of intraplate active faults.
My research has mostly been in seismically active intraplate regions sitting far from the plate boundaries, such as South Korea, and internally deforming regions, such as the Himalayas. More recently, I have been working in seismically quieter'stable continental regions, mainly South Korea, where we are working on creating a nationwide digital active fault map using classic paleoseismic techniques. I employ a multidisciplinary approach that includes quantitative geomorphic and structural analysis through fieldwork, remote sensing and GIS, interpretation of geophysical datasets, and paleoseismic trenching (2D and 3D trenching techniques).
I am also working on ESI-2007 intensity for recent and historical damaging earthquakes to develop an attenuation relationship between magnitiude and intensity based on ESI-2007 intensity.
