Dr. Rupam Kr. Sharma is presently working as an Assistant Professor in the department of CSE in Rajiv Gandhi University, Arunachal Pradesh, India. Prior to this he had worked as Assistant Professor in the department of Computer Application in Assam Don Bosco University , India from 2011 to 2020 and St. Anthony's College, Shillong from 2010 to 2011.
WORK EXPERIENCE
Assistant Professor, Rajiv Gandhi University(Central University), 2021-present
I am presently teaching subjects like Internet of Things(IoT),Discrete Mathematics,Computer Network, Network Security and Machine Learning. I am also supervising the set up of an IoT lab in the department campus for design and development of IoT products and exploring research issues in the same area.
Assistant Professor, Assam Don Bosco University, 2011-2021
During the ongoing 10 years of experience, I have taught subjects like Computer Network, Network Security and Forensics, Advanced Computer Network, Android application development, Information Security fundamentals, Digital/Network Forensics in both UG and PG programmes. Apart from these I have worked in the lab with the students as part of Network Forensics Curriculum analyzing data recovery, disk hash imaging, PLIST, JPEG analysis and network dump analysis.
I have also been an organizing member of several international conferences and national workshops. I have also been faculty mentor of students Data Science and Cyber Security Club. I have also led students’ team to final event of All India Hackathon, conducted by Govt. Of India and Ideathon, conducted by Govt. of Assam, India.
Assistant Professor, St. Anthony’s College, 2010-2011
I oversaw teaching Computer network and Network security in BSc (Computer Science) and Master of Computer Applications (MCA). Apart from the above, I also took classes for: CCNA, OCA, PGDCA. In the CCNA classes I was engaging students with network protocol configuration with cisco routers and L3 switches. In OCA classes I had to teach students the different SQL queries by which Oracle database could be best handled.
PhD work:
PhD Title : “Designing a bio-inspired method of response in Intrusion Detection System”
Description: In this research work for the first time in Bio-inspired research the defense mechanism of plants was explored as a potential study to design an Intrusion Detection System. Plants have a very well three layered structure defense mechanism and the same was adopted to simulate the defense in computer network to observe how it could react to known attacks, potential bot attacks and unknown attacks. The research also explored the limb regeneration process of salamander and how the positional information stored in cells are reused whenever a limb is amputated. This mechanism is explored for data and service recovery of a node whenever it is compromised in a network. The experimental model demonstrates that even in a ransomware like attack , the compromised data and services could be recovered with collaborated work of the other systems on the network.
Areas of interest
Computer Network:
I have worked with different network tools while demonstrating experiments to students about understanding the network behavior. Some of the tools that I have worked extensively are:
oPacket Tracer for Network simulation of routing protocols and VLAN
oNS3 for Node activity analysis by customizing own script
oPython API for network pentesting.
Digital Forensics:
While teaching the Network Forensics paper in the PG and on my interest on this field, I have worked with the following tools and languages for different experimental analysis.
Scapy: This powerful python tool allows for customization of network traffic for pen-testing the security of a network. This tool also allows to dissect any incoming and outgoing traffic for analysis.
Kali Linux: This Linux based OS have hundreds of tools to operate upon. Tools like foremost, pdf-parser for forensic are useful in forensic analysis.
Autopsy: One of the easiest GUI tools for hard drive and mobile phone forensic analysis.
Dumpzilla: This allows for browser information to be analyzed.
Machine Learning:
Apart from teaching the regular machine learning course in the Academic program,I have used machine learning in my PhD work while designing a bio-inspired method of response in an Intrusion Detection System. Since then, I have been encouraging students to use machine learning in college projects work. Statistical learning tools together with dynamic learning is a field that have been explored as part of project and laboratory experiments.
IoT Microcontroller programming:
I have used Arduino UNO and raspberry pi in a number of electronic driven projects. Regulation of stepper, servo, humidity, moisture, temperature sensors etc. I am confident in using them in designing IoT based products that could be useful in various category of applications.
