About

My research focuses on the status of marine ecosystems and the valuation of ecosystem services, particularly fisheries, climate regulation, and cultural benefits. I study the effects of anthropogenic impacts on these ecosystems using models and observational data, and analyze the ecological and social risks and costs using an interdisciplinary, ecosystem-based approach that also supports marine spatial planning.
Throughout my career, I have specialized in the study of benthic coralligenous ecosystems, seagrass meadows, and planktonic communities in relation to the carbon cycle. Through various interdisciplinary collaborations and stakeholder engagement, I have investigated the impacts of climate change using food-web modeling, survey techniques, and environmental economic modeling to assess the cultural impacts of environmental degradation, local ecological knowledge, and macroeconomic consequences in several case studies.
My analyses cover coastal areas, particularly the northern Adriatic Sea and the southern Benguela system, as well as the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean.
