About
Dr. Praveen Kishore Sahu is a Senior Scientist and Molecular Biologist from the state of Odisha, INDIA. He is a key contributor of molecular biology research in infectious diseases in India, particularly to the understanding and combating malaria in Odisha. Dr Sahu’s research approach amalgamates discovery and translational science, spanning from bench-to-bedside to field, i.e., combining laboratory, clinical, and field expertise to deliver practical and tangible outcomes. His research outputs have significantly advanced the understanding and scientific literature of Malaria at the molecular level that are relevant for diagnosis, treatment, and elimination strategies.
Dr Sahu began working on Malaria since 2005, investigating the genetic-diversity & drug-resistance genes of human malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum and subsequently, went on to publish some of the most significant and landmark findings on the pathogenetic mechanisms of cerebral malaria pathogenesis in Indian patients with brain swelling and its underlying genetic, transcriptomic and clinical determinants. He is leading an effectiveness field-trial of an in-country malaria elimination program in several malarious districts of Odisha using a host of molecular, epidemiological and modelling tools in collaboration with various international experts and co-leading a longitudinal study of hidden reservoirs of parasites in variable malaria settings of Odisha with an aim to develop new biomarkers, as well co investigating a drug efficacy using molecular surveillance in collaboration with ICMR. He is also collaborating with international universities and global tech giants to develop new AI based real time malaria diagnostics deployable in the field.
Dr Sahu is also appointed as a Visiting Professor of Biotechnology at Sambalpur University, Odisha, India with active roles in teaching and supervision of doctoral students in Biotechnology. He is also the Deputy Director of the International Center for Excellence in Malaria Research in INDIA, CSCMi.
With more than two decades of research and teaching experience, Dr Sahu has published numerous research articles and reviews in high impact international journals e.g. ClD, JCI Insight, J Exp Med, Nature Sci Rep, Clin Trans Med, EMBO Mol Med, Trends in Parasitol, Life Sci Alliance, Front Cell Infect Microbiol, MSphere, Pathogens, Glob Health Action, TRSTMH, AJTMH, and top Indian journals like IJMR, JVBD, etc. He has received several international and national awards and fellowships to date and serves as an active reviewer for several peer-reviewed international journals e.g. Nat Sci Rep, PloS One, Health Sci Rep, JCM, JMIR Publ Health Surveillance, AI in Medicine, Frontier journals (in Genetics, Cell Infect Microbiol, Neurology, Pediatrics, Public Health), JVBD, etc. He is member of several national/international scientific societies e.g. ESCMID, ASTMH, ASM, NAVBD, ISMOCD, etc.
Besides outstanding achievements in malaria research, Dr Sahu has also expanded his research focus to investigate the genotype-phenotype correlation seen in hemoglobinopathies and thalassemia in India, particularly in patients from Odisha and Maharashtra; besides characterization of novel genetic determinants and biocontrol measures against multi-drug resistant biofilm-associated infections in humans.
