About

Harsh Kumar is a passionate researcher currently pursuing his Ph.D. in Tribology under the guidance of Prof. Mayank Tiwari at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Patna, India. He earned his M.Tech in Machine Design from the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Durgapur (2018–2020) and completed his B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering at Krishna Institute of Engineering and Technology (KIET), Ghaziabad, in 2016. Harsh serves as the Secretary of the ASME IIT Patna Student Section for 2024–2025 and is an active member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). His research focuses on exploring the tribological behavior of surfaces under rolling-sliding contact conditions, with an emphasis on advancing the understanding of underlying mechanisms in such mechanical systems. His work includes modelling of friction torque in deep groove bearings, studying the interactions between balls and races, as well as balls and cages. His work examines the impact of critical factors such as surface roughness, speed, and load on friction torque. Motivated by the rising prominence of electric vehicles (EVs), Harsh is investigating how bearing currents lead to premature failures in EV systems. He is currently developing a model to estimate electric contact resistance in lubricated rolling-sliding contacts, aiming to establish correlations between tribological parameters and electric resistance. Additionally, his research includes analyzing the performance of coatings such as Zinc Phosphate, Tungsten Carbide, and Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) to reduce friction and enhance the lifespan of bearings. Harsh's dedication and excellence were recognized when he received the Excellent Paper Award at the 2024 International Conference on Engineering Tribology and Applied Technology (ICETAT 2024), held in Nantou County, Taiwan. With a strong interest in simulation and modeling, Harsh aspires to contribute groundbreaking insights into the performance of lubricated rough surfaces in rolling-sliding contacts, driving innovation in Tribology to improve the efficiency and reliability of mechanical systems.
