About

Dr M.K. Badapanda has original and innovative contributions to the advancement and development of solid-state modular power supply technologies, having two patents granted as their single inventor, a dozen of new technologies and products development and their technology transferred to multiple industries having impressive techno-economic-social impacts; delivered 60 invited talks in India and abroad; received dozens of prestigious awards, fellowships and recognitions; completed dozens of crucial projects and 150 peer-reviewed publications. He is Chair, IEEE Power Electronics Society (PELS) Chapter; Chair, IEEE Industrial Electronics Society (IES) Chapter; Chair, IEEE Industry Applications Society (IAS) Chapter; Chair, IEEE Systems Council (SC) and Chair, IEEE Industry Relations Committee (IRC) as well as Vice Chair, IEEE Madhya Pradesh section (MP & Chhattisgarh), India during 2022-2026. He has chaired various committees of several IEEE conferences and workshops organized by IEEE Bombay Section, IEEE Madhya Pradesh section and IEEE Region-10 (Asia Pacific Region). He is an IEEE PLES DL for 2026 & 2027.

He is leading the activity of application oriented research, design, development, demonstration, deployment, O&M and up gradation of various precision regulated HVDC power supplies for tube-based RF amplifiers as well as high current DC and pulsed power supplies for solid state RF amplifiers along with their control and protection aspects during last 3 decades for various particle accelerators in India. He has epitomized excellence in the field of advanced power converters and indigenously developed several technically challenging DC and pulsed power supplies, ranging from 50V, 20A to 100kV, 25A, DC and 50V, 80A to 250kV, 250A, pulsed, and has unique credibility that nearly 500 nos. of them are operating with various national facilities in India. As a trailblazer in the field of HVDC power supplies, he has designed and developed a novel 36kV, 24A modular DC power supply, which uniquely achieves full-range 24-pulsed 11kV input and ripple-free HV output in international scenario, irrespective of input voltage variations, output voltage requirements and number of faulty modules. It achieves better input and output performances at lower cost, compared to HVDC schemes employed worldwide, based on which US patent no.10027122B2 and Indian patent no.436206 are granted as their sole inventor, an EU patent pending, work published in IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics and technology transferred to industries. It is a unique development having impressive techno-economic-social impacts, treated as significant achievement in the field of electrical engineering and gained popularity for various applications worldwide. Again, he has designed and developed 24 numbers of 50V, 700A modular DC power supplies, incorporating active redundancy and hot swappable features, wherein faulty power modules can be replaced ONLINE, without switching OFF the power supply, thereby improving system availability significantly, which are in 24x7 operations with Indus-2 since 2017, and its technology is also transferred to industries. Based on this development, one number of 50V, 1950A water-cooled DC power supply is designed and developed, meeting stringent performances and system availability ≥0.999975, for biasing 40kW solid-state RF amplifiers of PIP-II accelerator of Fermilab, USA, which industries in other countries are unable to develop, proving his unique expertise in the field and their bulk fabrications are underway. He has established 1MW, 352MHz RF test set up, which is the basic building block of Accelerator Driven Subcritical System (ADSS) for nuclear power generation to use country’s vast Thorium reserve and transmutation of long-lived nuclear wastes, to meet its net-zero commitment. It is a part of national readiness for embracing ADSS technologies for cleaner, safer, base-load nuclear power generation within country.

He is DAE Raja Ramanna Chair; Fellow, Indian National Academy of Engineering & member, INAE Fellow eval. committee; Fellow, Institution of Engineers (India); SMIEE and well known in the field of precision regulated DC power supplies, mentored a team of scientists and engineers pursuing R&D in this field, delivered several invited talks in India, South Korea, Japan, Singapore, Germany, Spain, Switzerland and Canada and closely interacted with power converter manufacturers across the globe. He has received a dozen of prestigious awards including one time "IETE Bimal Bose award-2026" from IETE; one time “Technologist of the year award-2023” from IEEE India Council, one time “Research excellence award-2023” from The Institution of Engineers (India), one time “Best paper award-2025” from IEEE ECCE Asia-2025, one time “Best chapter award-2025” from IEEE Power Electronics Society, one time “Best section award-2023” from IEEE Region 10 (Asia pacific) and four times DAE excellence awards from Government of India, etc.
