Dr. Kumar received his PhD from Department of Chemical Sciences (DCS), Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai. His PhD thesis has been awarded with “2011 Eli Lilly Outstanding Thesis Award" in the “Structural Biology Section” owing to promising implications of designed NMR methodologies for rapid structural investigations of proteins. After PhD, Kumar joined CBMR as an assistant professor and meticulously continued with his pursuit of developing NMR methods and protocols. Over the years, several 2D/3D heteronuclear NMR correlation experiments and their reduced-dimensionality versions have been designed for high-throughput structural-proteomics studies through minimal data collection, simple data analysis and involving least human intervention. Depending upon the size of protein and offered spectral complexity, the NMR methodologies are strategically used in combination with other chemical biology tools to investigate its mechanistic structural biology and subsequently for rational drug discovery. The approach has been used to characterize the structural/dynamics features of several peptides/proteins including drug-peptide salmon calcitonin, histone like DNA binding protein of Helicobacter pylori and nuclear export protein (NEP) of influenza-A virus strain (H1N1) in solution. In order to resonate with the mandate of CBMR, Dr. Kumar also plunged himself in the area of clinical and pre-clinical metabolomics studies. The approach has been used for disease metabotyping (i.e. to identify disease specific metabolic signatures and further to explore their utility in clinical diagnosis and surveillance) of various complex and mechanistically challenging autoimmune inflammatory diseases such Takayasu Arteritis, small vessel vasculitis, Lupus, Lupus nephritis, Myositis, Rheumatoid arthritis, Osteoarthritis, Sarcoidosis, Scleroderma and various spondyloarthritis conditions (such as Reactive arthritis, Ankylosing spondylitis, etc.) and other devastating human pathologies like end-stage renal failure (ESRF), acute-myocardial infarction (AMI), acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF), lung-cancer, tuberculosis, etc. Additionally, Kumar’s lab is exquisitely involved in pre-clinical metabolomics studies for evaluating the therapeutic efficacy and safety of potential candidate drugs/formulations on animal/rat models of diabetes and cancers such as breast cancer, colon cancer, hepatic cancer, etc.
He has more than 15 years of research experience in the area of biomolecular NMR and has authored more than 105 research publications, about 50 conference papers, 3 book chapters and one national patent. He has delivered several invited lectures in national and international conferences/symposia and served as a resource person during four DST sponsored NMR workshops organized in different parts of the country. He is founder President of TBRS and recently has been elected as young associate of Indian Academy of Sciences (IASc) for three years (2019-2022). He is recipient of the CBMR-NMRS gold medal from National Magnetic Resonance Society (NMRS), India for the year 2013 and currently, serving as its executive committee (EC) member, India. He has been selected as a member of the National Academy of Science (MNASc), India in the year 2021 for his contribution to Biological Sciences. In addition, he is also serving as an editorial board member of peer-review journals of international repute such as “Frontiers in molecular biosciences” and “Current Metabolomics and Systems Biology”.
