About

Dr. Aminur Rahman is the Executive Director of the Centre for Injury Prevention and Research and has been leading the drowning prevention research activities since its inception. He has over three decades of experience in public health research, teaching, programme and intervention development and implementation, with a particular focus on child drowning prevention in Bangladesh and beyond.

After graduating in medicine (MBBS) from Dhaka University in 1986, Dr. Rahman completed his Diploma in Community Medicine (DCM) in 1991 from Dhaka University. He completed Masters in Medical Education (M.Med.) in 1997 from Dundee University, UK. In 2010 he completed his PhD from the Department of Public Health Sciences, Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden.

He has also served as Adjunct Faculty at the School of Public Health, Independent University, Bangladesh, and is currently an Adjunct Associate Professor at the School of Population Health, University of New South Wales (UNSW), Sydney, Australia.

Dr. Rahman has contributed to landmark studies, including the Bangladesh Health and Injury Survey and the PRECISE study, which produced important evidence for child injury and drowning prevention interventions. He has published more than 90 peer-reviewed articles, contributed to major international publications such as WHO reports on child injury and drowning prevention, and authored the book chapter titled ‘Swimming and Water Survival Competence’ in Drowning – Prevention, Rescue, Treatment.

Dr. Rahman serves on national and international drowning prevention and research platforms. His contributions have received international recognition, including the International Lifesaving Federation’s Distinguished Service to Drowning Prevention Award in 2017, the Royal Life Saving Society Commonwealth’s HRH Prince Michael of Kent Certificate of Merit in 2024, and the Research Honour Award in 2025 for his outstanding contributions to drowning prevention research and the global drowning prevention mission.
