About
I earned my Master's degree in Physics with honors from the University of Florence in October 2014 and subsequently achieved a PhD from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid in April 2019, also graduating with the distinction of "Cum laude." Throughout my doctoral studies at the Ceramics and Glass Institute (ICV-CSIC), under the guidance of Prof. Alicia Durán and the supervision of Dr. María Jesús Pascual and Dr. Yolanda Castro, my research primarily focused on the preparation, structural, and optical characterization of glasses and nanostructured glass-ceramics for photonic applications.
During the PhD, I undertook the preparation of nanomaterials in diverse forms, including bulk, thin films, and optical fibers, utilizing melt-quenching and sol-gel methods. I introduced rare-earth ions (RE) to explore optical applications such as up- and down-conversion. A significant achievement was the comprehensive comparison and explanation of crystallization mechanisms, structures, RE local environments, and optical properties of nanomaterials obtained through different processing routes. A notable innovation was my contribution to the development of optical fibers containing LaF3 and NaLuF4 nanocrystals, showcasing their application in light amplification and up-conversion within optical fibers.
From February to May 2015, I conducted research on the optical properties of luminescent glasses at the Institute of Applied Physics (IFAC) of the National Research Council (CNR) of Italy. I enhanced my knowledge of glasses and glass-ceramics by participating in prestigious international schools, including the Advanced School on Glasses and Glass-Ceramics in Sao Carlos (August 2015) and the 8th Summer School in Montpellier (July 2016), organized by the International Commission on Glass.
Recognized for my contributions, I received a grant from COST Action (2000€) MP1401 in 2016 for a Short-Term Scientific Mission in the Laboratory of Optical Fiber Technology at the Bialystok University of Technology (Poland). During this mission, I developed glass-ceramic optical fibers with enhanced luminescence efficiencies and capabilities compared to standard glass fibers.
From May 2019 to October 2022, I held a Post-Doc position at the ALBA Synchrotron, one of Spain's Unique Science and Technology Infrastructures (ICTS). Here, my research focused on XAS in the field of photonic materials, particularly studying the local structure around RE ions and transition metals in optical and magnetic materials. Additionally, I diversified my research by participating in a national project with IMDEA Energía, focusing on the study of nanomaterials for applications in solar fuels photoelectrocatalytic production. I actively collaborated with researchers from various countries, including China, Italy, Estonia, and Slovakia.
In October 2022, I was granted a Juan de la Cierva fellowship and joined the Institute of Optics (CSIC). Here, I initiated research on the laser processing of materials by pulsed laser deposition and established a research line based on glasses and transparent ceramics doped with transition metals for photoluminescence applications.
I have supervised 2 Master's student projects (UAM), and since 2023 I have been supervising a Master's student (UCM) based on the research line I established at the Institute of Optics and related to the laser processing of novel rare-earth free glasses for photonic applications.
My research findings are documented in 53 peer-reviewed scientific papers (35 in Q1, 19 in D1, average IF=6.85 and 60% of them within international collaborations, 55% open access), including 12 as the first author and 6 as the corresponding author, 1 book chapter, and 9 conference papers. These publications, presented at 32 conferences (12 as invited talks), have garnered a notable impact, accumulating 719 citations (h-index=17, i10-index=28), underscoring the significance and influence of my contributions. I have been an integral part of the organizing committee of 1 international conference (Crystallization 12, 2017, CSIC-SECV). I have received one national award (Spanish Ceramics and Glass Society, Spain) and one international prize (Şişecam, Turkey). I have also served as a reviewer for esteemed journals such as Scientific Reports, Ceramics International, Journal of Non-Crystalline Solids, Journal of the American Ceramic Society, Journal of the European Ceramic Society, Journal of Luminescence, Optical Materials, and Langmuir.
