About
Dr Fredrick Juma Syanya is an accomplished aquaculture and fisheries scientist with over 14 years of professional experience working across Africa (Kenya) and Asia (India). His PhD research focused on sustainable fish masculinisation technologies, where he investigated the use of organic and synthetic non-steroidal aromatase inhibitors as environmentally responsible alternatives to conventional steroidal hormones such as methyl testosterone substances increasingly linked to adverse ecological and human health effects.Beyond reproductive physiology, Dr Syanya specialises in fish feeds and nutrition, with a strong emphasis on developing innovative, sustainable feed ingredients and cost-effective diets that enhance productivity while reducing environmental impacts. His work contributes directly to the advancement of resilient aquaculture systems suited to the socioeconomic contexts of the Global South.Dr Syanya holds a PhD in Sustainable Aquaculture from Cochin University of Science and Technology (India). He holds a Master of Science in Sustainable Aquaculture from the University of St Andrews, Scotland UK, and is a distinguished alumnus of both the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (UK) and the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) Scholarship under the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India.Fluent in English, Kiswahili, and Luhya, he brings a multicultural perspective and strong collaborative skills to his work.
