About

Sukomal Pal presently is an associate professor in the department of Computer Science and Engineering at IIT(BHU) since March 2022. Prior to this, he was an assistant professor at IIT(BHU) and IIT (ISM) Dhanbad (Dec 2010 - Mar 2022). He earned his PhD and MTech in Computer Science from ISI Kolkata in 2012 and 2005 respectively and BE in Electrical Engineering from IIEST (erstwhile BE College), Shibpur in 1999. Earlier he served as a Lecturer at Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Allahabad, UP, for one semester during July-December 2010. Prior to that, he worked in a DIT-funded project `Cross Lingual Information Access' at ISI, Kolkata (April 2007- July 2010) and was a junior research fellow there (July 2005-April 2007). He also possesses work experience in IT industry (Tata Consultancy Services, September 1999 - August 2003). In his professional career, he has handled various industrial and academic projects at different parts of India and abroad in different capacities. He has authored a book, an invited book chapter, and published research papers in various international journals and international conference or workshop proceedings of repute. He also served research community as organizing chair, PC member for different international conferences like ICON-2016, FIRE 2008-14, INEX 2007-11, RAIT 2012-14 etc. He worked as visiing sceintist at Uinversity of Hildesheim, Germany in Summer 2019 and visited University of Heidelberg, Germany in 2019. He also visited Edinburgh, UK in 2001-02, Dagstuhl, Germany in 2007, NTCIR, Tokyo, Japan in 2008 and in 2010 and University of Padova in 2015. He delivered invited talk at Kobe University, Japan in 2008 and at Univ of Padova in 2015. In 2013 he was also invited as a visiting scientist to University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Presently he is professional member of ACM, IEEE, British Computer Society-Information Retrieval Special Group (BCS-IRSG) and Information Retrieval Society of India (IRSI). He was awarded 'BEST JASIST PAPER' in 2012 by Jon Wiley publishers, was one of the authors in 'IPM Best Paper Award -Honorable Mention 2016'. Presently he is authoring a textbook on operating system, serving as associate editor for Springer Nature Computer Science and reviewers for several journals and conferences.
