Simon is currently a full time lecturer at the Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology and one of the most experienced marine biologists in Ireland having worked extensively on whales, dolphins and porpoises, seabirds, basking sharks and marine turtles. He has carried out primary research from Ireland to the Antarctic and the Cape Verde Islands including surveying inshore and offshore waters of the Atlantic Ocean. He has founded and is still a key figure in two NGOs: Irish Whale and Dolphin Group (www.iwdg.ie) and the Shannon Dolphin and Wildlife Foundation (www.shannondolphins.ie) which are both involved in research and conservation of cetaceans. This work has led to involvement in a range of management groups and positions. Key to this success has been establishing robust recording schemes to generated the science to support conservation actions and advice. These recording schemes now include over 21,000 sighting records and 2,500 stranding records, all available on-line with associated on-line search engines and have been recognised as a model for marine biological recording throughout Europe. During 20 year study of the bottlenose dolphins in the Shannon Estuary we have a database which includes 50,000 images currently being uploaded onto IMatch and Finbase and is one of the longest running bottlenose dolphin projects in Europe. More recently Simon has been involved in developing survey methodology using distance sampling from single platforms for small coastal sites necessary for identifying important habitats and monitoring programmes. In recent years this has included harbour porpoise site surveys for SAC designation and baseline surveys for a wave energy project in Ireland.
