About

Professor (Dr.) Mohammad Shahar Yar is an accomplished researcher and academician with deep expertise in both traditional and in-silico drug design. His research proficiency extends to troubleshooting chemical reactions, identifying and managing side products, and analyzing impurities.

He has engaged in collaborative research projects with internationally renowned institutions, including the TAACF Southern Research Institute (Alabama, USA), the Rega Institute for Medical Research (Leuven, Belgium), and the National Cancer Institute (USA). Over the course of his academic career, he has supervised 28 Ph.D. scholars and 32 Master’s students, contributing significantly to the field of pharmaceutical chemistry.

Dr. Yar’s research primarily focuses on the synthesis of various heterocyclic moieties such as benzimidazoles, benzothiazoles, pyrazolines, and pyrimidines, and their biological evaluations for activities including antidiabetic, anticonvulsant, diuretic, and anticancer effects. His current work centers on the design and development of benzimidazole derivatives as potential anticancer agents. To date, he has published over 220 research articles in internationally reputed journals and authored 37 monographs.

With an h-index of 53 and over 10,942 citations, Dr. Yar is recognized as a leading figure in his field. He has successfully managed several major research projects exceeding ₹2.5 crore, funded by ICMR, UGC, AICTE, CCRUM, and other prestigious agencies. His excellence in teaching and research has been acknowledged through awards such as the AICTE “Visvesvaraya Best Teacher Award” (2020).

Dr. Yar has made invaluable contributions to the growth of Jamia Hamdard University, particularly to its School of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (SPER), which has consistently achieved the No. 1 NIRF ranking in Pharmacy (2017, 2018, 2020–2025). In addition to his academic and research responsibilities, He is serving as Director of the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), he also served as Deputy Director of the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) for more than 4 yrs. He is nodal officer and Coordinator of NIRF, THE and QS ranking as well as Coordinator of AISHE at Jamia Hamdard. He has also held administrative positions such as Chairman of the Admission Committee (2024-25), Chief Proctor (2024-25), Warden of the International Boys’ Hostel, and In-Charge of the University Guest House.

He played a pivotal role in the launch of the B.Tech. Food Technology program at Jamia Hamdard in 2016 and coordinated the IGNOU Food Technology program during 2016–2017 and 2018.
