About
Professor Rajesh Murugan currently serves as an Associate Professor in the Design and Automation Division, School of Mechanical Engineering, at Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT), Vellore, India. He received his Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) from Anna University, India, in 2010, followed by a Master of Engineering (Engineering Design) from the College of Engineering, Guindy (CEG), Anna University, Chennai, in 2013. He was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Engineering from the National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK), Mangalore, on January 13, 2017.
Professor Murugan's research focuses on critical technological challenges in the areas of materials and mechanics, with substantial contributions to the understanding of the mechanical, vibrational, and dynamic behavior of advanced composite materials, particularly in relation to composite joint failure analysis. His major research interests include:
Development of adhesive joints for aerospace applications,
Reinforcement enhancement of natural fiber composites,
Design and characterization of natural fiber-reinforced composite films for active food packaging.
He has supervised multiple research projects at various academic levels (1 Ph.D. awarded, 5 B.Tech theses), contributing to an extensive academic portfolio that includes over 50 publications in SCI and Scopus-indexed journals, 16 book chapters, 2 refereed conference proceedings, and 2 edited volumes published by CRC Press and Springer.
Alongside his research pursuits, Professor Murugan is actively involved in teaching undergraduate courses in mechanical design, including:
Engineering Mechanics, Mechanics of Materials, Machine Drawing, Kinematics and Dynamics of Machinery, New Product Development, Design of Machine Elements, and Design of Transmission Systems.
In recognition of his academic excellence and research impact, he was ranked among the Top 2% of the most influential researchers globally, according to the 2022 Stanford University Global Ranking.
He has also served in various academic and administrative capacities, including roles as Examination Coordinator, NAAC Accreditation Committee Member, and Ph.D. Selection Committee Member.
