About

Prof. Madan Kumar Jha has been working in the field of “Soil and Water Engineering” for about 25 years. He is a promising, vibrant and dedicated researcher and teacher. He has an excellent academic record and has been awarded several international and national scholarships/fellowships including prestigious Humboldt and JSPS Fellowships. He is acclaimed by his peers in India and abroad. Besides teaching at IIT Kharagpur, he has been active in imparting training, delivering expert lectures, and creating awareness of water scarcity and sustainable water management. He has been keenly involved in various sponsored research and consultancy projects on the planning and design of water harvesting & artificial recharge, groundwater exploration and assessment, integrated water resources management, and on-farm water management in drought-prone regions of West Bengal. He has also carried out comprehensive and long-term research on integrated water management at a basin scale in other states (Odisha, Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu) using novel tools/techniques and modern concepts. These research yielded cost-effective techniques and/or improved management strategies for water conservation, groundwater augmentation and protection as well as optimal plans for the efficient management of land and water resources in respective basins, thereby ensuring sustainable/improved water supply. These research outcomes are very useful to the planners and decision-makers, and have direct impacts on the socio-economic development of concerned farmers and other stakeholders. In addition, Prof. Jha has published to date 124 papers in reputed peer-reviewed journals, 21 book chapters, and 5 books as well as has developed 7 professional software packages that are very useful for practicing hydrologists. He has also made excellent contributions to the profession by developing modern laboratories and research facilities for quality teaching and research in the broad area of “Soil and Water Engineering”.

Research Areas: Groundwater Management; Basin-wide Simulation-Optimization Modeling; Inverse Modeling; Rainwater Harvesting and Artificial Recharge; Groundwater-Surface Water Interaction; Conjunctive Use Planning and Management; Seawater Intrusion and Tide-Aquifer Interaction; Application of Soft-Computing/AI Techniques in Groundwater Hydrology; Climate and Socio-economic Change Impacts on Inland and Coastal Groundwater Systems; Application of Geospatial and Multi-criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) Techniques for Integrated Planning, Development and Management of Water Resources; and Aquifer Vulnerability Mapping and Pollution Risk Assessment.
