About
Dr. Suman Bera is a Materials Scientist who combines materials science, chemistry and physics to tackle key challenges in diverse sustainable energy, medical and security applications. His research focuses on nanoscale materials: (1) particularly the surface facets modulation and interfaces engineering to form heterostructures of semiconducting nanocrystals including perovskite and chalcogenides nanocrystals and even in inorganic-organic hybrids clusters; (2) investigation of their novel optoelectronic and photophysical properties through steady-state and ultrafast spectroscopy; and (3) exploration of these nanocrystals for various energy applications including solar cell, laser, CO2 reduction and X-ray imaging scintillations etc.
Dr. Bera is currently a independent postdoctoral researcher at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), Saudi Arabia. Before that, He was a postdoctoral research associate at Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science (IACS), India and received his PhD degree from the same institute. He did his MSc degree in Chemistry from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras), India. During his research tenure, he has been fortunate to be co-author of 33 research papers (including 15 first author and 4 corresponding author papers) and 1 Indian patent (submitted) and currently he is also involved in several other research projects. His work on facet engineering in lead halide perovskite nanocrystals and its applications has been cited in prestigious journals and also highlighted in C& EN (https://cen.acs.org/materials/nanomaterials/Perovskite-nanocrystals-available-12-26/98/i47) and JACS spotlights (https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/jacs.0c12474). Moreover, his review article written on perovskite nanocrystals heterostructures, has been selected as an Editor's choice article and one of the top downloaded articles in ACS Energy Letters. He has presented his research work in several National & International Conferences and have received Best Poster Presentation at nanoGe Conferences and also delivered talks as an Invited Speaker at Nano-22: 5th Edition of Conference on Nanotechnology, Physics Scholars Symposium (PSS)-2023, Hybrid Perovskite (Hype)-2023. Recently, he has been highlighted as one the "Three rising stars of nanoscience and nanotechnology" in 'Nature' (https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-026-02181-5). He has received highly competitive (only 3% success rate) KAUST Global Postdoctoral Fellowship as the first Indian. Moreover, he has also been selected for prestigious Newton International Postdoctoral Fellowship-2024 (University of Oxford, UK) and Marie Sklodowska-Curie actions Seal of Excellence-2024 (University of Oxford, UK). Besides this, he was also a recipient of CSIR-Research Associate (2020-2023, IACS) an esteemed national postdoctoral fellowship of India. He secured an All India Rank 36 in CSIR-NET 2014 in Chemical Sciences. He was also awarded with Inspire Scholarship (top 5% awarded). His aim is to make significant contributions to the understanding of nanoscale materials, pushing the boundaries of knowledge in this field and aspire to attain unique properties for the advancements in applications such as optoelectronics, renewable energy and X-ray imaging (medical diagnosis, security checks and environmental monitoring) for the creation of practical, impactful solutions which drive real-world change.
