About

Prof. Kumaran Kannaiyan is an Associate Professor in Mechanical Engineering at the Guangdong Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, China, and the lead principal investigator (PI) of the Sustainable Energy Technologies Lab. Has an active international academic profile with more than 15 years of research experience in the field of thermal science. Broadly, CO2 mitigation and CO2 utilization are the overarching themes of his research directions, aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Specifically, engaged in research on different aspects of ‘Aviation – Propulsion’ for more than eight years, and on ‘CO2 utilization’ for sustainable energy harvesting applications. Most of his research projects have extensive interactions and scientific collaborations with academic colleagues, industrial partners, and key international research organizations.

His research expertise/directions are multidisciplinary and involve a combination of experimental and computational approaches on research topics that are of interest to Aerospace, Mechanical, Environmental, and Chemical Engineering. Some of the research topics include, but are not limited to, low-carbon/carbon-free aviation fuel, nanoscale energy boosters, high-speed propulsion, Zeotropic mixtures as alternatives for refrigeration, heat pumps, etc., CO2 adsorption characteristics, and adsorption-based cogeneration applications, to name a few. He is open to exploring new research avenues that aim to benefit the wider public. He has successfully secured external research grants to the tune of 1 million USD as PI and co-PI on the aforementioned research directions. He has ample experience and expertise in leading international research collaborations with academic and industrial partners and converting them into high-impact research publications. Thus far, he has published more than 50 technical publications in peer-reviewed high-impact journals (25+), international conferences (30+), and book chapters (4), receiving more than 1100+ citations (Google Scholar) with a growing h-index. His research team includes postdoctoral research associates, master's students, research assistants, and many undergraduate research assistants.

Academically, he has more than seven years of teaching in the higher education system at premier institutions. His teaching interests include core foundation and elective courses such as Thermodynamics, Fluid Mechanics, Heat and Mass Transfer, Introduction to Technical drawing, etc. He has hands-on experience in adopting digital pedagogy and learning management tools for teaching. His teaching methods have consistently received positive feedback from students across organizations.
