About
Dr. Simi Pushpan is a native of Desom, Aluva. Her graduation in B.Sc. Chemistry was obtained from U.C. College, Affiliated with M.G. University. She obtained her postgraduate degree in M.Sc. Chemical Sciences from Pondicherry Central University. Her Doctoral research work was done at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IITK) under the eminent supervision of Prof. Dr. T.K. Chandrashekar. Her Ph.D. thesis work, entitled “Core Modified N-confused and Expanded Porphyrinoids: Syntheses, Characterization, and Photodynamic Activity,” was selected for the IUPAC Prize for Young Chemists for the year 2002 (One of the four recipients selected out of applicants worldwide).
A postdoctoral Fellowship from the prestigious Alexander von Humboldt (AvH) Foundation funded her research work on carboplatin derivatives as anticancer agents under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Henri Brunner at the University of Regensburg, Germany. She acquired another postdoctoral experience in the pharmaceutical industry and worked as a Senior Research Scientist in the medicinal chemistry division and the intellectual property management division of Orchid Research Laboratories in Chennai for >5 years. She also gained experience as a Scientific Manager at BBRC (Biocon-Bristol Myers Squibb Research Center) for >4 years. She joined the Department of Chemistry at U.C. College in March 2013 as an Assistant professor. She has over 27 publications in national and international journal publications, 3 book chapters, and >13 patent publications. Her major research interests include the green synthesis of novel small molecules and porphyrinoid-based privileged scaffolds with pharmacological activity. She has been an approved Research Guide at Mahatma Gandhi University since June 2019. She is currently supervising three research scholars pursuing their doctoral studies.
She was a Member of the Special Vigilance Squad (2016–2020) of M.G. University.
