About
I recently joined UTHealth as a postdoctoral fellow. I work towards neural spike oscillon coupling to understand learning and memory. I also serve as the editorial board member in frontiers in computational neuroscience. Before this I was a postdoctoral associate at Yale school of medicine, USA, under the initiative of Swartz Fellowship. My PhD was in Computational Neuroscience at Intelligent Systems Research Center, University of Ulster in collaboration with University of Oxford. Prior to this I was a computational neuroscience researcher in Intelligent Systems Lab, Dept. of Electrical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur. I completed my Masters in Design (Intelligent Systems Design) and Bachelor of Technology in Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering. My research interest involves Computational Neuroscience, Emotion learning, Biomedical signal processing (spiking data, EEG, ERP etc.), Intelligent Systems Design, Non-invasive techniques for disease identification, Machine learning, Cognitive Neuroscience, Sleep studies, Non-pharmacological interventions for Sleep Disorders. I’m particularly interested in applying machine learning tools to understanding the functionality of brain during various cognitive states. My programming skill sets include Matlab, Python. Along with these, I have experience in normal lab management like assisting the team members in scheduling the PSG recording sessions, recruitment of subjects, assisting the administration of the therapy, database management etc.
In PhD project at Ulster University (UU), UK, in collaboration with experimental neurobiologists from The University of Oxford, I was analysing data collected from state-of-the-art large-scale neuronal recording in behaving animals. The experimental techniques employed include optogenetics, single-unit and multi-unit recordings, and intracranial EEG. The project specifically aims to understand emotional learning signalled by serotonin and other neurons using state-of-the-art large-scale neuronal recording in behaving animals. The analysis includes advanced machine learning and signal processing techniques. The project would have implications on fundamental cognitive neuroscience and neuropsychiatric disorders. The work is published in IEEE conf and frontiers in computational neuroscience.
In my masters, I worked in designing Artificial Neural Network (ANN) based MATLAB programs for Sleep Disorders and Detection of Sleep Arousals. The algorithm can detect accurately the sleep arousals from the Polysomnography data, which can be used by the medical practitioners to detect the sleep disorders easily in a few minutes and accurately, without the normal painstaking effort of manual scoring for 5-6 hours per recording. I worked on Cognitive and Behavioural Therapy with certain modification in relaxation training, in conjunction with our medical collaborator and sleep experts from SCB medical college. Improvement in the sleep quality was observed on the subsequent PSG reports of the subjects in comparison to their previous sleep pattern i.e. before administering CBT. The method was further tested with various statistical techniques like t-test, repeated measures ANOVA on the IITK population by taking a sample size of 80. Both these works are published in IEEE conf and journal of psychophysiology and biofeedback.
In one of my projects, I worked on Deep Belief Network (DBN) towards decreasing the complexities faced during the classification of EEG signals using ANN. The algorithm can effectively detect the Eye states, which is 40 times faster than the best existing algorithms. I worked with ANN and signal processing in a few projects taken in my masters course works e.g. Basics of Modern Controls, Intelligent Systems and Controls and Introduction to Robotics.
In a workshop conducted by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), I worked on a project on, "Automatic Control and Measurement of Light Intensity" and successfully completed it with further improved practical application on AC circuits, as an academic course project of IITK, thereafter. The project uses an Electronic circuit and a MATLAB based program to automatically control the intensities of the artificial lights as per the user’s requirement, which has practical application in power savings in industries and aesthetics in living rooms. My bachelor studies in Electronics & Tele-communication Engg. helped me understand new tools and technologies for Signal Processing and Mathematical techniques, which became useful in my academic project works.
