About
I am a postdoctoral researcher in isotope geochemistry and geoscience at the Department of Geological Sciences & Department of Archaeology, University of Cape Town. My current research focuses on expanding the application of TILDAS (Tunable Infrared Laser Direct Absorption Spectroscopy) for triple oxygen isotope measurement across varied geological sample types beyond carbonates, and on characterising triple oxygen isotopic variability in modern atmospheric CO₂ — including contributions to a global background CO₂ reference dataset in collaboration with the Cape Point Weather Station and to the standardisation of the CO₂ triple oxygen isotope reference framework with the IAEA.
My PhD, completed at the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, developed a high-precision cryogenic fluorination protocol for triple oxygen isotope measurement (δ¹⁷O, δ¹⁸O, Δ′¹⁷O) in silicate and oxide minerals, achieving Δ′¹⁷O precisions of ±4–6 ppm. I applied this framework to two problems: reconstructing the mantle source architecture and crustal evolution of the Deccan Volcanic Province through combined triple oxygen isotope and elemental geochemistry of flood basalts, and recovering Cretaceous–Paleocene palaeoenvironmental and hydrological signals from intertrappean silicified woods, opals, and gastropod shells across the K-Pg boundary. My broader research interests include silica diagenesis, chert geochemistry, palaeoclimate reconstruction, and modern climate dynamics.
