Dr. Goutam Brahmachari, M.Sc (1st Class 1st), PhD, D.Sc., FRSC, is a full professor of organic chemistry at Visva-Bharati University, Santiniketan, India. His group contributed significantly to developing effective and practical synthetic methods for carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatom bond formation in constructing medicinally important heterocyclic scaffolds using C-H functionalization, cascade and cross-coupling approaches. Prof. Brahmachari also made outstanding contributions to natural product chemistry by unearthing the chemical profiles of several traditionally used Indian medicinal plants, studying their chemistry and biology, and thus presenting novel phytochemicals of interest. With more than 27 years of experience in teaching and research, he has produced 301 scientific publications, including original research papers, review articles, books, and invited book chapters in synthetic organic chemistry and natural products chemistry. He has already authored/edited 28 books from the leading scientific publishers. He has supervised 20 Ph.D. fellows so far. He is the Founding Series Editor of the Elsevier Book Series ‘Natural Product Drug Discovery’. Prof. Brahmachari is an Elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and a recipient of the Acharya P. C. Ray Memorial Lecture Award-2025 from the Indian Science News Association (ISNA), Kolkata, Dr. Satyajit Chakraborti Memorial Award-2025 (global contribution to chemical science) from IEM, Kolkata, CRSI (Chemical Research Society of India) Bronze Medal-2021 (contributions to research in chemistry), Dr. Basudev Banerjee Memorial Award-2021 (Contribution in chemical sciences) from the Indian Chemical Society, INSA (Indian National Science Academy) Teachers Award-2019, Dr. Kalam Best Teaching Faculty Award-2017, and Academic Brilliance Award-2015 (Excellence in Research). Prof. Brahmachari was featured in the World Ranking of the Top 2% Scientists (Organic Chemistry Category) in 2020-25 (both in whole career and single years), in the AD Scientific World Ranking of Scientists -2022-2024, as the ScholarGPS Highly Ranked Scholar-2022-2024 (Lifetime, securing a position in the top 0.05% of all scholars worldwide). Contribution to the knowledge domain
In his longstanding professional career over the last twenty-two years at Visva-Bharati (a Central University), Professor Goutam Brahmachari has contributed significantly to synthetic organic chemistry, green chemistry and natural products chemistry through healthy and meaningful research outcomes published in peer-reviewed high-standard journals. He has contributed substantially to developing innovative and green chemistry-directed inexpensive and eco-friendly organic synthetic methodologies for important and useful structural frameworks of medicinal relevance. Simultaneously, as a natural product chemist, he has unearthed chemical profiles of several important and traditionally used Indian medicinal plants, studied their chemistry and biology, and thus presented novel phytochemicals of interest. His scientific contributions achieved several awards and accolades. Apart from the original research, Prof. Brahmachari has significantly contributed by authoring and editing an unprecedentedly colossal number of highly-acclaimed reference books in the relevant areas. Professor Brahmachari perfectly combines a passionate teacher, an innovative independent researcher, a prolific author, and an editor, thus serving the community truly.
